Dear fellow lernu! members,

Salutations,

I'm having trouble expressing the concept of "running" a budget deficit/surplus.
As in, "if one of three sectors is to run a surplus, at least one of the others must run a deficit."

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

William.

In this context, how does the concept of "running" differ from "having" or "creating"?

I think the essential idea here is one of maintaining or sustaining.

I don't think daŭrigi quite fits the bill. And kontinui/kontinuigi seem to be concerned with the lack of interruption and not quite right.

I suppose subteni might do, its reference seems quite broad. Maybe you could just say kurigi.

Se en unu el la tri sektoroj ni kurigos pozitivan saldon, tiam en almenaŭ unu el la aliaj ni devos subteni deficiton.

I'm quite suprised to find that NPIV doesn't register 'surpluso', nor 'susteni or 'sosteni'.

Of course you could just say daŭre tenos or daŭre realigos, where I have experimented with kurigi.

I haven't attempted to translate the nuance in 'is to run' of if that is going to be our decision.

That's how I was translating it, as "having" a surplus, "havante buĝetan pluson"
