Did you ever accidentally meet an Esperantist?

I shall be going up to the Language Show at Olympia in London shortly, to put in a stint at EAB's stand in the show.

From the moment that I set off for the railway station, en route to the show, and during the show, and on my return journey, I shall be wearing a conference style badge with the text Mi parolas Esperanton. Ĉu ankaŭ vi?

The number of people who see that will certainly be in the thousands. I shall report what happens.

Obviously if you don't advertise the fact that you speak Esperanto you are very unlikely to be accosted in Esperanto by a total stranger.

By the way, you can get a free pass to attend the Language Show simply by registering here. Don't forget to tick Esperanto as a language you are interested in.

It would be great to have as many people as possible wandering round the show advertising that they speak Esperanto (I'll take a supply of badges to the EAB stand). The show is the biggest of its kind in Europe and very well attended. I'll be going up on the Saturday (Oct 20th). Ni ĉeestu amase!

As a filthy commie, I find your tone displeasing. Although, I think the melon thing is weird as hell. I do rather enjoy the lefty version of the Esperanto flag (see attached).

It happened to me a few times. Once at the bakery in my town I saw a guy with the "Esperanto, oficiala lingvo de Antarktiko" T-shirt. He was a beginner who took lessons in a neighboring town.

And I ran into esperantists I knew in the Paris metro twice.

Maybe I accidentally saw more esperantists, but how would I know? It's not written on their face.

I also had one completely random meeting with Esperantist. Neither of us had any insignia, it just came out in the conversation that we both know the language.

After I'd been learning for a little while, it turned out that one of my co-workers had been an Esperantist for a couple of decades. He even gave me a copy of "The Esperanto Teacher" that he had kicking around, once he found out I was learning. We would drop Esperanto into our conversations now and again, although now that he's retired Esperanto doesn't creep into my workplace to quite the same extent it did previously.

Both of us dealt with (in my case, still deal with) branches of my company in Japan and Singapore on a fairly regular basis. Both of us were/are of the opinion that if the people in Japan and Singapore we communicate with regularly would just learn Esperanto, it would be sooooo much easier on everyone concerned. Seriously, many "English" emails from co-workers in Singapore are almost entirely unintelligible to us, and some of the Japanese-English emails we get can be very puzzling indeed. I give them credit for trying, but from a practical standpoint they simply don't speak English. Asking even a simple question and getting a simple answer (in either direction) can take multiple email tries over several days - it is usually very inefficient. This is a perfect example of a situation where both sides knowing Esperanto would be a major win. But... as you might expect, having them learn Esperanto simply isn't going to happen.

I once met a French Esperanto speaker in Malta, by accident. I was travelling with another Esperanto speaker, so I am not sure whether this French person knew me by the green star pin on my coat, or by me shouting out something at my travelling companion in Esperanto, but it was him who approached me. It was one of the highlights of my trip, I never expected it to happen to me.

.... but I also never expected to be eating in a restaurant and have Bill and Hillary Clinton walk in and sit down for a meal, and it just happened to me tonight. You never know what's going to happen in your life, do you?

I'm guessing it would be a lot more likely to happen in Washington, DC than in Seattle, though. ridulo.gif
