Hey all, I was considering buying a esperanto - esperanto dictionary. I dont want to have to buy the PIV, I haven't got that much money to spare, so does anyone know any other decent ones? Smaller, no doubt, but I would only use it for common words. Maybe 5000 entries? More or less? Thanks!

You might consider the PV, it is much smaller. However, it is out of print and it will probably be difficult to find, though I suspect you will be able to scare up a used copy.

The full title is "Plena vortaro de Esperanto kun Suplemento". The author is E. Grosjean-Maupin.

Another thing you might consider is getting a used copy of the PIV. Sometimes you can find one reasonably priced. But I think the PV is more useful, in the sense that you are more likely to use it. It is much smaller so it is easier to use on a regular basis, without hauling a huge volume off your shelf.

Ho, Danke al vi pro la rekomendo. Mi ĵus mendis ĝin. Oni ankoraŭ povas trovi ĝin ĉe abebooks.com (kelke da ili restas).

Thanks for the recommendation ridulo.gif I just ordered it. One can still find it at abebooks.com (a few of them are still available).

Yeah, the PV seemed like the perfect solution, I just always try to buy esperanto stuff first hand, you know, to help the 'esperanto industry', if you could call it that.

But if nothing else comes up, I think that I will get a PV second hand. Thats the thing about the PIV, I dont think I would ever use it, and it would just sit on my shelf. Although it is tempting!

EDIT: I just thought... SAT seems to reprint its publications every few years, I dont suppose this is likely to happen with the PV?
