I invite Lernu forum members to have a go. You can try the easy ones, or just have a go at the more difficult ones (like the distinction between harbour and port - Ramsgate has both). Also if you spot an obvious missing term, then please add it in.
Terms to be translated (to be added to):
Shellfish - cockles, winkles, mussels, whelks, crab
Other fish - cod, plaice, skate, haddock, whitebait, shrimp, prawn, kipper
Shoreline: rocks, flints, stones, cliff falls, chalk, topsoil, caves, bays, gaps, seaweed, high/low tide, breakwater, white horses, breakers, surf, paddle, beach, sands, light-house, rock pools, rods, nets, bait, bucket, spade, beach parasol, windbreak, swimming trunks, bikini, marina, harbour wall, port, ferry.
Town and amusements: lift, chine, steps, cliff, bandstand, boating pool, park, amusement arcade, slot machine, payout, bingo hall, casino, house percentage, chips, dealer, bet, payout, single/double room, market, alley, night club, bar, dress code (no jeans or trainers) patio heater, saucy postcards, sea gulls.

sudanglo:I am in the process of compiling a seaside vocab list for the benefit of those attending the Ramsgate Congress. ..if you spot an obvious missing term, then please add it in.I have been a free- and SCUBA diver since I was a boy. Every surfer and diver knows the term "drop off," i.e., the point at which the wave (measured from the back) is as high as the water beneath it and it begins to break. That's a critical piece of knowledge for safety's sake to avoid stepping unexpectedly into deep water (''Oh, here the water is only up to my knees.. er, neck!'' ) ") I always taught students new to swimming at the shore to notice where that happens. There can be more than one such point on the way out, depending on how the surf carves the bottom up.
Another term important for safety at the seaside is "rip tide." This happens when too much water comes in between barriers of some sort and the resulting high water rushes back out the middle. Swimmers get carried off by it and not knowing to swim at an angle to get out of it, drown. Divers, understanding them, use them to get out faster.
I am unable to find translations for either. Suggestions anyone?
