Need a vocab quiz program

I need a quiz program that I can create vocab quizzes for myself for the chapters we are studying.

I would like to keep the vocab chapters separate, so that I can test myself on Chapter 1 without testing against Chapter 2, and vice versa.

I would also like to be able to run the quizzes in either direction, ie, it provides the English and then I need to answer in Esperanto, and the other way around.

I don't want the quiz pre-programmed, I want to be able to enter my vocab from my book.

Finally, I don't want multiple choice, I want to be required to type in the correct answer. So then if it displays "baki" I type "to bake" - or if it displays "to bake" I type "baki".

Is there some basic software of this type, hopefully free, that will let me type in a vocab list, and then test me in whichever direction I require?

As far as I'm aware, Anki does all of this.

Anki is interesting, and I may wind up using it assuming it can work both forwards and reverse, but as far as I can see, it does not permit you to type you answer in, it's more of a flash card system.

One improves one's memory even more by typing (kinesthesia) then just looking.

I'm surprised there aren't more people with suggestions, I would have assumed that this kind of request would be both common and easy to solve.

Apparently there's a version 2 of Anki that does even this, so it looks like Anki will fit the bill. Thanks! ridulo.gif

I would also recommend Anki, since I am using it as well. It is really useful und helpful and you can customize a lot of it.

How do you get Esperanto letters into it? I don't really want to see g"x", or g^, i want to see "ĝ"?

I found a windows plugin called Ek and it is wonderful, but it doesn't seem to work fully in Anki. I found an Anki Esperanto plugin:

I use an Esperantized keyboard layout of the standard German keyboard layout.
So Ctrl + Alt + "g" inputs "ĝ" and so on with the other special letters.

If you tell me what operation system you use and what keyboard layout I probably could help you more.

I would prefer to type "gx" in Anki and have it automatically place a ĝ there, etc.

Or "Cx" to get Ĉ, "sx" to get ŝ, etc.

The plugin I linked to claims to (i think) do that, but it does not seem to be doing that for me.

Any thoughts or help how I can get Anki to automatically use a "Ĝ" when I type "Gx" and so forth?

Have you tried using Tajpi instead of Ek? It has pretty much the same functionality but maybe it would work in places where Ek won't. It's free so you lose nothing by trying. http://www.zz9pza.net/tajpi/en/

Also, I hate to suggest this in a way, but in my opinion it's not a huge tragedy to just use the x-system. I learned Esperanto before Unicode was widespread and I type with the x-system. People receiving e-mails from me, therefore, get correctly 'hatted' messages from me when I'm at home (my computer runs Tajpi) and x-system messages when I'm at work or on someone else's computer. For me, if I read a text, then a minute later you ask me if it was x-system or with correct letters, I probably couldn't tell you, I just read it and don't notice. Comfort with reading the x-system is something you need less and less today, but you do still need it occasionally, so it's not a horrible idea to get used to it.

I've been using Ek for my system Esperanto letters:

It looks virtually identical to Tajpi - and I am sure there's a reason for that. However, Ek doesn't work in Anki - do you know from personal experience if Tajpi works inside of Anki specifically?
