I am currently in the process of (sporadically) translating De Profundis, a letter written by Oscar Wilde during his time in jail, into Esperanto. The text, in typical Victorian fashion, contains many flourishes and metaphors and uses a wider variety of words than is typically used today. As such, I have found it a particularly challenging text for translation, and in many places there is no way to make a fully satisfactory rendition into EO.
So, in the spirit of previous translation challenges on this forum, I would like to present snippets of the letter here for others to try their hand at. (If anyone's interested, I can share a link to my own online translation, which is still in progress.)
In particular, I'm interested in this paragraph:
For us there is only one season, the season of sorrow. The very sun and moon seem taken from us. Outside, the day may be blue and gold, but the light that creeps down through the thickly-muffled glass of the small iron-barred window beneath which one sits is grey and niggard. It is always twilight in one's cell, as it is always twilight in one's heart. And in the sphere of thought, no less than in the sphere of time, motion is no more. The thing that you personally have long ago forgotten, or can easily forget, is happening to me now, and will happen to me again to-morrow. Remember this, and you will be able to understand a little of why I am writing, and in this manner writing. . . .

Here we go:

The intended idea here is surely that the window doesn't let in much light.
If you want to be fanciful you could say la lumo pene penetras la blinda fenestro.
Onia doesn't seem justified for one's cel and one's heart. Sia will do here (the author is clearly involved). Ĉio sia estas plej ĉarma (Z)
Niggard is more avare ŝparema than kompatinda.

sudanglo:I find thickly-muffled an odd image for a window. One muffles for warmth, or for deadening sound (koltuko, dampilo).Indeed, prison walls are thick, but so is the glass of this small window to the extent of almost preventing the sound from outside to be heard in the cell.
I do not find the metaphor that bad.
So, “dika kaj surda vitro” may translate “thickly-muffled glass”.

This is clearly a stylistic effect by the author made to show the depersonalization process produced by the stay in jail.
First, he uses “us”, which involves him, but afterwards “one” and “one’s” which are clearly impersonal ‒ even though Oscar Wilde does speak about himself.
As a translator, I needed to use oni and onia to follow the author’s intent.
sudanglo:Niggard is more avare ŝparema than kompatinda. In this case, kompatinda is clearly the meaning involved.

matrix:It is an odd way to describe a window. My guess is that Wilde's aim in describing the window like that was to make music a metaphor for daylight and freedom, without actually mentioning the word 'music', only to allude to it. In other words, the window cruelly muffled the 'music' coming from outside, which otherwise would have been a source of simple delight in his dire situation.sudanglo:I find thickly-muffled an odd image for a window. I do not find the metaphor so bad.
So, “dika kaj surda vitro” may translate “thickly-muffled glass”.
Another alternative is that 'muffle' and 'stifle' were a bit closer in meaning in those times.
