So I am slightly perplexed here. What exactly does the -um- affix do? Thus far I've found that it is an affix without a predefined meaning, but that doesn't clarify much. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Well, embarrassingly enough, I just discovered another thread that covers my question most adequately. My apologies for the false alarm.

Ahh! Kie, kie?! Also, interested to know your term "thread" in esperanto. Surely a compound word taken from some of the proksimaj elements. Hmm...

Ah!
Poŝtaro? eh...

Mi estas vidinta! Ne problemo de kunmetitaj vortoj ĉi tie; nur tre bona respeguliĝo de la simpla tasko de fadenado. Fadeno.

I have tried to find the thread you mention, but with no success. Where (or how) did you find it?

Thanks!

I did a search on "um" (without quotes) in the search box in the upper right hand corner of the site, and the very first result in the return list was THIS thread.

I don't know if that's the particular thread that Aubright found, but it's a pretty good treatment of the subject.

Spot on Riot, that is indeed the thread! Thank you for linking it for me.

And it is fascinating. Thank you for ferreting it out!
