Need to practice speaking?

What is the correct way to say, "I need to practice speaking Esperanto?" Is it with infinitives ("Mi bezonas praktiki paroli Esperanton" ) or using a gerundive ("Mi bezonas praktiki parolanta Esperanton" ), using a gerundive as the object ("Mi bezonas praktiki parolanton Esperante" ), either, none, or something altogether different?

Mi devas ekzerci la paroladon de Esperanto.

Ekzerci seems a better fit to me than praktiki, from ReVo's definitons. Mi devas ekzerci paroli Esperanton is okay too.

I was thinking "ekzerci" too. Though according to PIV, the object of "ekzerci" should not be the theme of the learning, but rather the thing being made to learn.

2 examples given:

1. Ekzerci soldatojn (train soldiers)
2. Sin ekzerci en parolado (train oneself in / practice speaking)

By this pattern I'd say something like "mi bezonas sin (CORRECTION: "min" woops...) ekzerci en Esperanta parolado".

Oddly, PIV gives the definition of ekzerci as "lertigi per ripetata praktikado" (something like "to train by repeated practice" ). Which seems to suggest to me that "praktiki" can be used in the sense you desire, but then the actual definition of "praktiki" doesn't seem fitting...

I feel like I'm missing something :/

Zamenhof (according to ReVo) gave, ekzerciĝi en esperanta parolado.

So it seems we can plug up that gap with an iĝ. Mi devas ekzerciĝi en esperanta parolado. Mi devas ekzerciĝi la parolado de Esperanto.

One could switch devi for bezoni or even endi, depending on the strength of the need.

Praktik seems to be more commonly used as an adjective or adverb or noun than as a verb.

When it is used as a verb its meaning is to put into practice or to practise (profession occupation, religion etc).

Exerci sin je is more the meaning of practise as in I need to practise speaking.

So, Mi devas min ekzerci je la parol(ad)o de Esperanto.

So if I say li praktikas la forgeson de la akuzativo I am not saying that he is training himself to forget the accusative but rather that he actually forgets to use the accusative.

Fascinating. Warmest thanks to all! That's the first use of a reflexive verb I've encountered in Esperanto. Do any others spring to mind?

I don't know that there is a special category of reflexive verb in Esperanto. But use of verbs where the object is also the subject is commonplace - sin trovi, sin dediĉi, sin demandi etc.
