How does one say 'spicy' in Esperanto? Where by spicy, I mean hot, or pungent. The english wikipedia points out that the english term 'spicy' is very ambiguous and apparently 'pungency' is the more technical term for 'hot-spicy'.

There seems to be disagreement between the sources available to me. Wells has spicy=spica, as does the lernu dictionary, but this seems to be spicy in the sense of spiced rum or spicy in the way a pumpkin pie is spicy. Sonja's dictionary has hot, spicy = spica, forte spicita, which suggests this could also mean pungent. It's certainly true that something that is 'hot-spicy' is itself rather spiced, so 'spica/spicy' would do in a pinch, but is that correct?

While 'spico' seems to be spices, generally, poking around on Vikipedio, I arrive at kapsiko for peppers, which are described as coming in 'milda' and 'akra' varieties, and in particular kapsiketo or 'chili pepper' is described as having an 'akra' taste. But there is kapsiketa saŭco for 'hot sauce'.

So, I suppose I have two questions. The first is, if you are out with friends and order some food and it is very spicy (pungent, burns your mouth), what word would you use to describe it practically? Would you call it 'spica', 'akra', 'pika', 'morda', 'akragusta', 'kapsiketa', 'kapsikagusta' or 'kapsiketagusta'?

And secondly, if you wanted to be specific and say something was pungent(hot-spicy), what would you use? 'kapsiketa'? 'mordgusta'? 'pikgusta'? 'kapsiketagusta'? 'akraspica'? 'varmegagusta'? or something else entirely?

A kapsiko isn't necessarily spicy.

I sometimes say "pika" when I mean spicy, as in, burns your tongue with spice.

I found the expression akra used a couple of times in the Vikipedio: "Kapsiketa viandaĵo (angle kaj hispane chili con carne) estas akra sud-usona plado el viando, kapsiketoj kaj ..." and "Kapsiketa saŭco estas akra saŭco farita el kapsiketoj kaj aliaj ingrediencoj kiel ekzemple legomoj, vinagro kaj…
