RiotNrrd:I remember learning that the Esperanto vowels are supposed to be identical to the Italian vowels. If there are questions about pronunciation, I would look into how the Italians would say it.

sudanglo:It's a pity you are in Vietnam (too far to come to Ramsgate) as at the congress there (now only a week away), and which will be attended by native speakers of at least half a dozen different languages, we will be holding a competition, judged by votes from all the congress members, as to the most attractive accent in Esperanto.

After the congress I'll see if can post a soundfile of the winner and runners-up.
It is really awesome! AAAHHHH.... I am not possible to come. As long as your kindness, please please post the sound materials on this.

I think since Esperanto is a good idea, we might accept the wide variation of Esperanto accents from around the world.

According to Wikipedia, but whithout citation, Zamenhof recommends the pronunciation of Italian.

You can hear examples of Italian pronunciation on Forvo, as well as many other languages​​.

But we do accept variation.

You should read Wells's Lingvistikaj aspektoj de Esperanto, especially Chapters 2.6 Pluralofoneco ĉe vokaloj and 2.9 Bona kaj malbona prononcadoj. Wells is a renowned specialist in phonetics.

Since have a copy myself of this book I summarize.

The fewer phonemes there are in a language the greater the freedom in realisation.

Only 5 vowels in Esperanto so considerable tolerance in pronunciation of each vowel.

In contrast, 20 vowels in English, so if you are foreign learner whose mother tongue has a limited number of vowels there is a risk that the allophonic variation which you don't notice in your own language will cause you to wander over an English phonemic boundary and change one word into another, or at least create some doubt as to which word you intended,.

That said, there are however attractive pronunciations of Esperanto and ugly ones.

Vietnamese language has about 12 vowel sounds. They are A,Ă,Â,E,Ê,I,O,Ô,Ơ,U,Ư,Y. They itself are not too hard to pronounce. Since Vietnamese is a tonal language, it is a problem for foreigners. I think consonant and vowel sounds in Vietnamese is pretty various. But tones stop it from being free and it is rather difficult to sing with tonal languages.

Esperanto is still easier than Vietnamese as my opinion.
