Some people like using this day instead of December 15th as "Esperanto day" in order to keep the focus on the language and reduce the focus on Zamenhof (some people feel that too much emphasis is put on Zamenhof, and that he has become some kind of "saint", which he certainly did not himself support or feel comfortable with). December 15th is Zamenhof's birthday.
You can see why his birthday, versus the day of publishing the first book, might be differently emphasized by people coming from different viewpoints.

NJ Esperantist:The birthday of Zam has changed to the Esperanto Literature Day.Oijos:Link to short video about Esperanto on the main page of international edition of CNN website, but not in the USA edition.I hear news sources calling this 'Esperanto Day'. I thought December 15th was Esperanto Day.

Or something really obvious... they attempt to verbalize the Konami Code (up up down down left right left right b a start) and left right left right is put as: "Lasis dekstra lasis dekstra."
