I want to know when -al- must be used with a verb and if any other prepositions are necessary with some verbs.

perhaps I should clarify - the verb rigardi always has the preposition al following it.
for example
la viro regardas al la spegulon
Can you explain why this happens and if there are other preposition similar to this.

daveg53:the verb rigardi always has the preposition al following it.Not really, you can say "rigardi la spegulon", or "rigardi en la spegulo", "rigardi en poŝtokesto", etc.
What you are asking, that is, the "preferred" prepositions following certain verbs, is something that, to the best of my knowledge, you have to learn by heart. At least it will be for you far, far simpler than English, in this same respect, has been for me.
