I like soccer, esp. the video games. When I was little I had a Sega Genesis soccer game; I'd play it for hours, but then I lost to the USA. What's up with that?!( btw, I was playing as the Brazilian team.)

Was that game "World Cup Italia 90" by any chance? If yes, then by an extraordinary coincidence I was playing it on an emulator only last week!

Back to the topic, like Johmue, I too have observed not much enthusiasm for football from Esperantujo. I suspect this is partly because it's seen as a yobs' game, although given the internationality of it - especially at World Cup time - it could be a fertile area for finvenkist activity. Or maybe it's just that the Esperantist football/soccer fans have always been disconnected from one another.

I'm a lifelong fan who follows the English league and the European top level, although my interest has dimmed in the last year. My home team is Leicester City, and if you want to see how their season ended, watch this video. Bear in mind that if the player scores the penalty, LCFC are going to Wembley for the big playoff final for entry to the Premier League:

Watford v Leicester playoff semi-final second-leg climax

There's an Esperantist called Ferdinand Cesarano who is, I think, the only person who talks publicly about football in Esperanto. Here's his twitter page:

Futbalo

Next season should be interesting in the Premier League, with a new man at Old Trafford (wow!), Mourinho back at Chelsea, a new man at Man City, and Wayne Rooney possibly going to Arsenal.

I'd like to finish by saying that within a month's time (hopefully) I'll be self-publishing a novel that's set at the end of the 2006/07 English football league season - in a parallel universe where the world is football mad and Europe is ruled by an Esperanto-speaking organisation. I was going to announce this on the forum at the appropriate time, but because of this thread, I'm jumping the gun a bit. It's a remake of The 39 Steps, and all it needs is some final tweaks before going live. There'll be a giveaway, so any of you fellas who'd like to read it will be able to download it for free. Watch this space.

Nah, I think it was World Championship Soccer 2, but it's nice to meet another ol' school gamer. Good luck with your novel! I plan on being a graphic novelist myself. Btw, you're kinda cute XD!

I think it's more like Erinja said, that the topic of soccer a bit too local or national, as international soccer events are rare. Therefore people might think that while discussing about soccer in their pubs or office at home they would discuss about other topics on Esperanto meetings.

Personally I think that Esperanto should be used for every topic people care about, so definitely also for soccer. A community of Esperanto speaking soccer enthusiasts would be a good thing, that I would support. I strongly encourage you "futbalemuloj" (especially Samuel) to start it. Set up a blog like "Mondaj futbalaj novaĵoj" and write once a week. If you feel uncomfortable about your language skills, don't hesitate send me your articles for correction (as long as you don't write tons of pages).

One day you might go to Muzaiko and suggest spoken "Futbalaj novaĵoj" for their program, who knows.

erinja:If you had an event take place at World Cup time, it's a bit different perhaps, since everyone can discuss the international game together.
Yes. Actually we could discuss last night's match USA against Germany. I haven't watched it though ridulo.gif

SamuelG:I support [...] Shalke in the Bundesliga
Schalke? You're serious? Sure? ... Go away!

ridulo.gif Borussia Mönchengladbach
Schalke!! and oh yeah that win against Germany yesterday. okulumo.gif I am kidding, Germany didn't have their strongest squad out there, and we did. Also Ter Stegen made an AWFUL error, your goalie for Mönchengladbach. okulumo.gif

Ok ok. I see there is a serious discussion coming up. Unfortunately it would be off topic here, so we should move it to "Pri ĉio cetera" and carry on in Esperanto ridulo.gif

Yes, I’m definitely a big football fan and I support Everton.

The lack or football material in Esperanto has always been a problem for me because when you learn a language you want to read, write and talk about the things you would read, write and talk about in your own language i.e. your interests.

I agree that football can be a local thing, but if like me you like to watch (and therefore then discuss) football from different countries then the only opinion you can find is from either media in your own language or from a foreign speaker who has learnt your language. This is where I think Esperanto could be used to sort of give you a local view of international football (if that makes sense).

Unfortunately I don’t have the vocabulary yet to talk about football in Esperanto. But then I generally need to improve my vocab anyway.

Amike

Pretty much the only place I've ever seen soccer talked about within Esperantujo (at least online) is the 'sportoj' (sports) group in Facebook:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/sportoj/

It's not particularly active, but there's bound to be someone there who's more than willing to argue with you about soccer. ridulo.gif

My goodness, thank you! Do you know how long I've been searching for some football/soccer material in Esperanto? There is not much on that Twitter feed, but it's a start.

I'm a HUGE sports fan (football/soccer and basketball are my two favorites, but I like almost any sport). When I started studying Japanese and Portuguese and reached a certain level, I used sports media and reading material to help keep up my motivation for learning the language. There is nothing (I guess I should now say "hardly anything") like that in Esperanto. Even more, it's frustrating that it seems that the vast majority of Esperantists do not care for sports in general. I'm glad to see many sports fans writing in this thread.

I haven't yet decided yet if I want to learn Esperanto to a high level (hey, I haven't even decided yet if I want to restart my studies), but if I do, I would like to write a blog about sports in Esperanto. But I'm a long way from doing that.

I'm surprised to see that the football fans that are posting here are mainly Major League Soccer fans, as am I! I'm from the American South, and there are no MLS teams there, so I kind of follow D.C. United. I also follow Aston Villa in England and Vasco da Gama in Brazil.

My pleasure, hercxjo ridulo.gif

Hey Hobinho, if Moyes wins things with United, I imagine the Evertonians will be saying "why the friggin' hell didn't we give this guy more resources?"

InsaneInter:Nah, I think it was World Championship Soccer 2, but it's nice to meet another ol' school gamer. Good luck with your novel! I plan on being a graphic novelist myself. Btw, you're kinda cute XD!
The old ones are the best! I've just watched a video of that game, and it looks like Italia 90 from a different perspective on a smaller pitch.

You flatter me on the basis of a fuzzy photo ridulo.gif Thanks for your well wishes, and good look with your own ambitions, although I confess to not being into graphic novels and comics myself.

Question for MLS followers: What do you think about the ten-team playoff situation? It seems to me that it undermines the whole concept of a league as opposed to a tournament - and as Mourinho once said, the best team wins the league, but not always the cup.
