I was listening to a podcast on radio verda (http://radioverda.com/programoj/2013/5/23/rv199-20...) and they used the word "sentoksiĝo". The context was:
"Somera aranĝo por cifereca sentoksiĝo". But I can't find the definition of that word, not even in vortaro.net. Even if I break it down it doesn't compute for me. Does anyone have an idea of what it means?

As others have said, sen + toksi + iĝ + o. Basically: becoming not toxic.

They're talking about digital "detox" in the episode, though you could glean that information through context.

This is one of the really big things that comes with experience, but I promise that you will get there eventually. I have vivid memories of being a beginner and attempting to look up the components of a word to figure out what it meant, realizing it was a compound word with affixes, but unable to recognize what the elements were. I'd have to look up multiple variations in an attempt to identify where the 'breaks' were between the roots. Now, even with a compound that is totally new to me, my mind instantly finds the breaks and parses it. It's only on rare occasion that I have to think about it for a second (usually only if the word can be broken up in more than one way).

sen/toks/iĝ/o, sent/oks/iĝ/o (sen/tok/siĝ/o, toko and siĝo don't exist, but a beginner would never know that), it isn't obvious when you're just starting out, but it will become obvious.

I remember the first word that ever really threw me for a loop: disvolvi. At the time the word didn't appear in the Lernu vortaro (which was my only resource), so I assumed it was a kunmetaĵo. However, the best meaning I could come up with for it, at the time, was unwrap, which made absolutely no sense in the context of where I found it. But the context wasn't strong enough to let me figure out the real meaning (to develop).

Dis- is a known prefix. Spread about, scatter.
Volvi is a known verb. To wrap around something.

Disvolvi = ???. Unwrap? What? But that doesn't... huh?

Heck if I could figure it out.

It wasn't until much later, when I got my hands on a printed dictionary, that I found that disvolv- is a complete root in itself and not a kunmetaĵo at all. But, as a beginner, I had no way of knowing that, and it was a real puzzle for quite a while.

I'm happy to see that someone has added it to the Lernu vortaro in the meantime.

disvolvi is not a complete root in itself. But many words are roots in themselves, even though they have a meaning according to the linked parts. Example: racio, that restas

P.S. Why many of you are using lots of Esperanto loan words in the English part of the forum(kongresejo, kunmetaĵo...)? It is as annoying as seeing my language getting wiped out by English words. Or in BBC articles about France the unnecessary French loan words, because many Brits know some French. But they render the article unintelligible to me.

Kunmetaĵo is a very well known word among Esperanto students, as putting them together is something Esperantists do regularly. You should not be surprised to see the term used on this forum; it makes a regular appearance.
