I hope the Lernu team also makes the Lernu dictionary freely downloadable at some point. Yes, it can be linked to at the moment, but it would be great to be able to download it for use in e-readers etc... It's an open project depending on volunteers (such as me), so I think it should be freely downloadable.

I have been playing around with building a kindle version for about 2 years now. here's what i have learnt:

- A good Esperanto dictionary can be written for the kindle, although with some issues. It has the facilities to recognise almost all words in special characters and the x system.
- The kindle uses plain old vanilla "latin" alphabet. It does not like the UTF8 script that is required for the Esperanto alphabet, although it can handle it.
- due to this, some words produce silly results for example, ŝatas points to sati. some words list other words and descriptions. it always seems to be the special characters that confuse it.
- the Amazon self-publishing feature has an automatic e-book conversion tool. This is fantastic if you have a BOOK, not so good for dictionaries. This conversion tool destroys all the technical information out of the dictionary. This means that about 20% of the words get recognized after conversion. The real dictionary misses almost none. It is only complex words that the full dictionary will miss.
- The Amazon help desk do not know the difference between an e-book and an e-dictionary. you never get the same person twice, so they will never learn, and i will never get any reasonable help.
- Very few sites are set up to list a dictionary

The dictionary that i have on the kindle makes reading Esperanto so much easier, even with its small issues. Rather than spending a few minutes using the dictionary app on the phone, i spend a few seconds looking up words on the kindle. Makes reading so much quicker.
I have tried to get the full dictionary released, but i just can't seem to find anywhere that can do it without screwing up the file. I don't want to set up my own web site either. I have considered setting up a facebook page, but i would rather just maintain the dictionary, and not a web site.
Does anyone have any ideas?
