Slang -- again!!

I am working on Lernu's "Jen nia IJK" course and came across the expression "Sa Ina!" in ĉapitro 2.1. I realize that the use of slang in Esperanto is controversial so my question is, "Why is Lernu promoting it's use?" I thought that this issue had been discussed to death in the past.

I am of the opinion that slang should be discouraged in Esperanto and to find that Lernu is teaching it just annoys the dickens out of me! If Lernu is going to give in to the Facebook crowd, then why not just introduce a page entitled "Esperanto slang" and get it over with?

I think I can practically guarantee you that if you start, it is going to get out of hand. Once more, I am not going to bother with learning Esperanto if it is going to change every other day!! This is a very good way to destroy what Zamenhof created.

It has been covered from every angle time and time again in the past. Am I missing something? malgajo.gif

The course explains that Sa stands for a Saluton, so it would be a contraction rather than slang. But it is definitely strange (I have only heard Saluton contracted to Sal).

Must be a young person's thing. Certainly not part of Esperanto as it is spoken by most Esperantists. Your complaint seems justified.

There are too many words in Esperanto that begin with 'sa' for it to be a good idea, far fewer beginning with 'sal'

I don't know that Esperanto is ruined. LOL! But I don't think that this is a good thing.

Experience may teach us that change is inevitable, but wisdom teaches us that not all change is desirable. I think somebody at Lernu is opening up a can of worms.

From what I've seen of Esperantists that pop up here and then vanish after a short time, I don't think Esperanto has reached a place where it's able to give in to slang and styles without there being repercussions amongst the more... fad-oriented initiates. Perhaps it's best if it never does.

Also, I'm a little confused about why anyone would use "Sa" when we already have a monosyllabic greeting in "Hej."

So Ina seems to be name here. Then problem is only word "sa". I have never heard it used. That seems to be just bad choice for word.

According to Plena Ilustrita Vortaro de Esperanto and Reta Vortaro, "hej" can not substitute "Saluton!".

As of now I don't have a recommendation for a word, if you can not use "saluton". "Saluton" should be used whenever possible.

According to Plena Ilustrita Vortaro de Esperanto and Reta Vortaro, "hej" can not substitute "Saluton!".

As of now I don't have a recommendation for a word, if you can not use "saluton". "Saluton" should be used whenever possible.
I know personally, it gets rather stale just hearing "Saluton!"
"Saluton!"
"Saluton cxiuj!"
"Saluton!!"

So it is nice to be able to use different variants of Hello.
I've mainly been using "Hejo" as a greeting lately, since I usually say "Heyo" in English.
I'm just personally used to having multiple ways to greet people in my native language, so I guess only having one "Hello" word bothers me. :|

Well, personally I think slang is not a good idea in Esperanto because having an "correct" way to use the language it is like a guarantee for undertending and being understood.

I did not remember the word "sa" when I did that couse few years ago, but thinking better I could not understand the meaning writen unless somebody say it to me smiling and moving the hand doing the greeting gesture.

In Spanish we do not have many words to say "hello", "hi" or "hey", in fact all these words can be translated into "hola" and that does not bother me at all. So in my opinion we should keep on using Esperanto in a "correct" and "oficial" way, even if it is a living language.
