Greetings all,

A question came up in another thread in which someone asked (I think) what the Esperanto equivalent of BTW (by the way) would be. My choice would be PTZ (parenteze), but this made me stop and think of how I would express other common shortcuts (like OMG, LOL, etc.) in Esperanto and whether maybe there was kind of "standard" usage in Esperantujo.

How would you "translate" shortcuts like these (or others)? What other shortcuts might be useful?

It seems to me that TTY and SSB and CW operators likely spill some of their abbreviations into ordinary conversations and, likely nowadays, onto their handhelds that are digital phones. I gotta wonder which HAM abbreviations are also used internationally.

The article makes sense; seems like the way kids are composing these things and it is nice they aren't borrowing from other languages to do this.

Until Dave directed our attention there, I imagined () as denoting a parenthetical statement or some cobbled confabulation of p4n3Z' even though I like Paul's recommendation.

I looked in one of the Esperanto dictionaries I bought in the early 1980s (by Butler), but I don't see translations into Esperanto of the old abbreviations such as: e.g., i.e., etc., et seq., op. sit., et al, vs., viz., & stuff like those.

However, you must see the tree. The tree hides the path in the snow back to my house and I am in front of more footprints. I asked my (wonderful) husband to stand inside the house and take a photograph of me in the snow after the amazing snow-fall we experienced a few years ago.

Let us bring this back on topic, or nearly so, with a question. I might falsely claim that I vaulted high into the air and performed a triple flip into a fine landing and photograph-worthy finish to my jump. How would you write disbelief using keyboard text? In my native (southern Californian) fractured version of English, I would intuitively choose to text disbelief as

!?!

However, I'm over 50 years old. How would you text disbelief, unbelief?

This is marvelous! There are a couple or few blanks in the table grid that I see. I would say:

TTFN = Ta-Taa For Now = ĝ +
L8R = Later = MBR
and from clicking in Wikipedia it would appear that "clear as mud" is the meaning of HB.

Maybe the original answer to the original BTW question is also answered within the grid, as there is no English offered next to K = Kaj = ? If BTW = By-The-Way = parenthetically mentioning, then my (on another thread) guess for using the equivalent word "and" might actually be the K that we see in use on the grid.
