It is nice to read the old threats about the Esperanto for the backpackers. I am wondering how the project is going on with that little phrase book distributing to all over the world for the hostels.
The Facebook group of backpacker for Esperantists is available now but only Esperantists are interested in it though many still flock to the couchsurfing site.

What kind of phrases that the project is looking for ? How many phrases ? 100 or 200 ? I think the lernu has already some of it for the daily conversation.
What the backpackers talk about in the hostel or enquire for the next stop etc ?

erinja:The idea was that it would be a phrase book of phrases useful to backpackers in a hostel (this is the hard part, coming up with such a list) -- genuinely useful phrases to use when talking to one another, which might not match with a general tourist list for that place. And also a small grammar guide and a mini-course aimed at getting people talking right away, because backpackers are people who have time on their hands, on a long train trip or whatever, who might find it fun to work at a mini language course.Wow, good point. I have spent many hours on trains feeling bored... I could have been learning Esperento!
I wonder how easy it would be to convince staff at Hostels to learn it.. Im sure that would probably depend on what location you are dealing with.

If anyone feels like taking up the challenge, they are welcome to do it; we at lernu can help you with the contacts for distribution and perhaps even with some webspace eventually, but the content has to come first. We aren't going to spent our time and budget on setting up a website and a network of contacts before there is content to be distributed or posted.

An effective pocket course and phrasebook isn't as easy as it sounds...I absolutely can attest to the part about not being easy to make a phrasebook... I deal with this very issue with Chinese... Sometimes, Chinese people want me to whip up a Chinese-to-English phrasebook like it is something I can simply do in fifteen minutes... This type of thing is so complex.

I just suggest to print the 2014 pocket calendar with coordination from the IYHA and put them in the hostel for the lodgers. The card should include the learnu site and also kurso.com.br site.
Most of the bus stastions and train stations or airports are equipped with Wi-Fi, even the backpacker hotels too. If they are language lovers, they would take a look of it, if they are not, no matter how beautiful the book is and free, they would take a glance of it.
Next year is the UNESCO which recognised Esperanto 60 years anniversary.

Compile the lists and include the most commonly requested phrases in the phrase book.
Make the result available in pdf format for download to smartphones.
Disclaimer: I am no tech head so if pdf is not available for smartphones that is another project for someone. They could probably sell the pdf app through the various online stores.
