This thread is months old now. Duolingo has obviously forgotten about Esperanto and/or just couldn't care less about it.

Sorry that this is a reply to a month old comment. The Duolingo staff has not forgotten about Esperanto, but they are prioritizing other languages at the moment. Based on what they've said in recent weeks, it appears like that they will start working on Esperanto in the next couple months. They've recently announced that they are working on mechanisms so more people can work on languages at once, and in that announcement they mentioned Esperanto though in an off-hand way.

More ways to learn Esperanto can only be good. I've mostly be using memrise, but it took a long time for me to work out a way to make it work for me. So, hope we can find ways to make this work!

Hmmm... That post on Reddit doesn't actually say when he said it, only that someone posting on Reddit says that he said it. Public communication? Private statement? Who knows?

That said, I've done some looking into Duolingo and wonder how Esperanto will really fit into their business model. I can certainly understand that I could improve my French by creating draft translations into English of French sources (or rough draft translations of English sources into French). With enough free labor, someone's going to get a cheap and adequate translation of something.

There is no actual demand for translation into or out of Esperanto, alas.

Then there's a problem that Esperanto shares with Lernu. I've been thinking of it as "la Lernu-problemo," but Duolingo has it too. According to Wikipedia, the average time a Duolingo member spends on the site is 2 hours. Then they give up.

We have lots of Lernu members who haven't been seen in years. I was looking through profiles to try to find local esperantists (even beginners) and I found a depressing number of people who joined, visited again less than a week later, and have never been seen again.

Like Duolingo, Lernu needs to be a lot "stickier." I don't have an answer, and I will probably turn this into a new thread. However, the problem does raise the question of how much work is it worth to create another site where people don't learn Esperanto? How do we take the good-intentioned and turn them into niaj bonnaj amkimoj?

I definitely need to work on my Esperanto vocabulary a lot more before I can understand anything above the Ana Pana level right now. I will come back to that Audio on occasion to see myself picking out more of the conversation as time goes along. You have me curious as to what is in the interview.
