El Popola Cxinio (is it still in print?)

I recently bought a used book called "Esperanto for hope : A new way of learning the language of peace" by Maire Mullarney. I love it, it is a fascinating read and the author describes her own fascinating experience with language learning and eventually learning Esperanto. The book was published in 1989. In it, she mentions a magazine called El Popola Cxina. She praised it as a great way of practicing your Esperanto reading skills. I appreciate internet-based resources (including, of course, the brilliant Lernu.net). I am not a luddite, but, at the same time, there is something to be said for holding in one's hand a physical magazine or newspaper. I get more out of a language if I can hold something physically and carry it some place. The magazine Muy Interesante did a great deal to help my Spanish language learning. I would like to find a physical magazine kind of like that for Esperanto. Is El Popola Cxina still in print? I checked the Esperanto-USA Retbutiko and they did not appear to be selling it. Can a subscription to it in physical form be purchased elsewhere?

No, El Popola Ĉinio has followed many other print media and can only be found on the web, see the internet edition here.

But you are right. You certainly "get more out of a language if you can hold something physically and carry it some place". If you are looking for interesting reading in Esperanto but not just news about Esperanto and Esperantists, I warmly recommend Monato, the monthly news magazine.

I like Monato and read ePub version in my Kobo. Recently I put Reta Vortaro in my Kobo. So I can carry it to many places.

I can't say anything about the magazine, but I do feel your longing for physical media to read. I look at a computer screen all day, so the last thing I want is to look at one when reading/studying Esperanto. I have one Esperanto book (La Hobito) in real book format, and I have the translation of Alice in Wonderland in EPUB form on my Kobo e-reader. I highly recommend getting an e-ink reader to be able to take advantage of electronic formats without killing your eyes. I can also recommend Kobo, as they have good readers with external storage and support for multiple file formats.

I never looked deep enough into Reta Vortaro's website to see that they had downloads for offline use. Which Kobo do you have, and do you use the EPUB/MOBI forms or just the html? I have the Aura HD (I got it for reading PDFs of datasheets/etc. since it has the highest resolution and size), and could not be happier with it.

You can download the source files of Reta Vortaro here. I converted XML files to CSV, and generated the dictionary for Kobo with Penelope. I will explain better and provide the dictionary soon.

I have a Kobo Glo and read ePub and PDF. You can find some books here.

Just like others on this forum, I use a computer a few hours a day, but I also often like to have a physical document to hold in my hands while I sit in my easy chair with soft music playing and the cat dozing nearby ridulo.gif . There a large number of PDF files I have printed off (in Esperanto, other conIALs, and in other languages) specifically for that reason.

However, I own a tablet computer (Barnes&Noble Nook, but it could be any of various others) onto which I have loaded a large number of books and documents, including many in Esperanto (and Interlingua, to be honest). The tablet is not quite the same as a "real" ridulo.gif paper document, but nevertheless it is something physical and convenient that I can take to the coffee shop and read at my leisure, including paging through what I am reading.

Many Esperanto speakers have an accumulation of old magazines or books that they will likely never read again, that they might like to get rid of. Some time back, I made an offer of sending some of this old stuff to whoever wanted it, in exchange (optionally) for a small tourist trinket from wherever someone comes from.

I don't currently have a big backlog of stuff like I had when I originally made the offer, but someone else may wish to announce himself or herself, if you want to simultaneously clean out your house and see that some of your Esperanto stuff goes to an appreciative recipient.
