Hi,

I am new to this forum and just posted before about the pasporta servo program so hopefully I haven't annoyed anyone here yet.
I hope to learn Esperanto as fluently as I can and I have made a commitment to doing this.
I have ordered several books even used copies of out of print ones which include:

Teach Yourself Esperanto by JC Wells
Esperanto Dictionary by JC Wells
Marvinstrato by Tim Westover
Esperanto Learning and Using the International Language by David Richardson
Faktoj kaj Fantazioj by Marjarie Boulton
Esperanto English dictionary by Montague Butler (heard a lot of good things about this one!)

Unfortunately when I ordered the Wells dictionary I ordered a used copy of the 1992 reprint instead of the 2010 updated version,
Instead of buying the 2010 version I was wondering if anyone here could give me a list of modern Esperanto words and what they mean in English that would not be in the 1992 dictionary?
It doesn't have to be every new term but basic new words like internet, cell phone and texting would be great.
Thank You

As I understand it the Teach Yourself Wells dictionary was continuously reprinted without a new edition from 1969 onwards, so there could be quite few modern terms missing. However you will still find it useful.

You can access the 2005 edition of PIV for free online at Vortaro.net, use your Lernu name and password to sign in.

It isn't possible to give a list of every word that has changed; someone would need to go through the entire dictionary!

You can use the lernu dictionary to look up words you don't know - I just looked up cell phone and it gave me the correct word, which is poŝtelefono. Anything that you can't find in the lernu dictionary or in your old Wells, just ask here in the forum. You won't annoy anyone simply by asking, people are pretty friendly and helpful here.

I agree it is not feasible to give you a list of every word that has been added since an arbitrary year. However, unless you have very limited access to a computer I don't see much point to owning a paper dictionary. The dictionary here on Lernu!, the PIV (Plena Ilustrita Vortaro), the Reta Vortaro, and ESPDIC are four good dictionaries to choose from. I find that sometimes one of them has a word the others lack, so it is good to learn to use them all.

The time saved by using a computer dictionary significant compared to leafing through a paper dictionary, but an alphabetized list is still useful.

Welcome to the club.

No problem. I will use the online dictionaries for finding words not in the older print editions.

It also gives the correct translation for 'mobile' (in case you don't understand American).

http://komputeko.net/ will at least give you computer terms.

Here's a useful link worth saving:
