Are you really unsure of the difference between "against" and "across"?

Er...ok, then.

Mi batalas kontraŭ lin.
I battle against him.

Mi promenas trans la vojon.
I walk across the road.

I could only promeni kontraŭ la vojon if somehow it was vertical, and I suppose I could batali trans lin if I was across from him having a battle with someone and we just happened to be going in his direction.

Hope this clears things up a bit.

The given answers should be sufficient for you question. The only way I can see these words being mixed up is in describing 'sides' of a particular conflict, possibly "I stand against you" vs "I stand across from you" (on the side opposing you).

I would suggest that you consult at least 2, if not 3 different dictionaries for words you are unsure of. I also find it very helpful to read the Esperanto definition of a word if the English translation is not clear/precise enough. This has saved me from using the wrong word several times, and is a good exercise of your skills.

Even if your vocabulary isn't very large you can use an English-Esperanto vortaro to translate the words in the Esperanto dictionary definitions (sounds more difficult than it is).
