I am working on a master's in teaching English as a second language. But I am writing a thesis paper about why Esperanto should be taught to all American first graders. I would really appreciate your input about the language if you don't mind spending 5-10 minutes completing the survey. Thank you very much.

Stacey, I took the survey for you. I found it interesting, though, that you did not ask if I thought Esperanto should be taught to all American first graders (Yes, by the way) and if so, why (So they can quickly learn that a "foreign" language has value by enabling them to communicate with others).

I'm glad teachers are taking interest in this. (even if you knew about it before beginning your degree)

As regards question 10, Do you think it would be better for Esperanto to be the dominant international language, as opposed to English? I think you need a response box to allow a qualified answer.

International communication occurs at different levels and in different fields. There's a place both for English and Esperanto. It would not seem sensible to try and replace English in written communication in academia, as things now stand. But for face to face communication in a social setting Esperanto trumps English.

Hallo, the survey is only for people from US? It is not clear. About your thesis. Do you know Springboard to languages?

>a survey for all the esperantists
>in English

That is why English is the world language, not Esperanto...

Thank you all very much for completing the survey and for your thoughts. It is very interesting to me. I am still collecting them so if anyone else wants to answer, I greatly appreciate it. The main data I need from Esperantists is how quickly the language can be learned, though I am interested in anything else a person wants to add.

I did add a box for thoughts on why Esperanto should or should not be the international language, and I removed the question "Do you speak English" as that is an idiotic question on a survey written in English. : ) In response to one of the replies,I wrote the survey in English because I do not yet speak Esperanto, though I now intend to learn.

Thank you all! Stacey

I took the survey as well. I'm just beginning with Esperanto, although I speak fluent conversational Mandarin Chinese, and pretty good Spanish and Portuguese. Reading Esperanto makes me feel like we're all equal everywhere in the world. English carries a lot of colonial baggage,as well as perceived and an unfortunately often real feeling of superiority on the part of some Native English speakers. I felt that most strongly from Americans when living in Taiwan for a year. I truly believe Americans are mostly good, kind, generous people, but often we're very often self centered as well, or as we say here "full of ourselves." I guess every culture has different good and bad points. Maybe Americans are this way because we're so isolated from other countries and cultures and languages, except Spanish I guess. Finally, I do agree for good or bad, English will be the dominant "international" language for a while, but Esperanto still has it's place even now. Peace out and dftba. Steven

Hi! Don't take this the wrong way, but I legitimately hope you are not trying to get an accurate survey of the opinions of Esperanto speakers using a survey written in English (or French, or Chinese, or German, or whatever language).
