Besides, I'd be careful of trying to herd people to stay absolutely on-topic all the time, so long as the discussion is fairly productive, because that's how proper conversations naturally work, isn't it, one topic leading to another based on what everyone's saying (and sometimes those links can be useful or interesting even though other people hadn't necessarily considered them)...

There's always a balance to be struck.
But the thing about forums is that the users can make a new thread for each {new topic that branches off of the previous one}.

It's pretty common on any internet thread for the conversation to drift steadily away from the original topic. If you want to bring it back, hit the Reply button under the original post and write your response below the original text.

It was deleted. There was a user who was insistent on turning it into a flame war, so although I was originally going to allow it, I eventually figured I had no choice but to shut it down.
