Oijos:What you mean? I don't understand. English-language discussions about English language are not allowed. I did not start this discussion.
I sincerely apologize, Oijos, I mixed up two posts.

sudanglo:It is a favourite sport at the annual British Esperanto Congress to read out the names of those members of the association who have died that year. This produces a warm glow in the attending members (a largely geriatric crowd)
I'd prefer to discuss the overdue language reforms, but apparently the Esperanto Congresses are not "designed" for such malicious activity. | Mi preferus pridiskuti la posttempaj reformoj de la lingvo, sed la Esperantaj Kongresoj sxajne ne estas "konstruitaj" por tiaj malicaj taskoj. malgajo.gif

That's depressing.

I still cannot pass the C level. But I won't surrender!

The lernu site is simply the best resourse available. Hard to criticize it.

When I first started using lernu!, a little over a year ago, I started at the beginning with Ana Pana. I thought I could never ever pass the C level exam. When I finally did, I was so shocked that I took it a couple of times more to be sure ridulo.gif. The great thing about the exams is that I learn more, every time I take one. Now I am a "lingvohelpanto", a live tutor for Ana Pana, and I am enjoying that a lot. Keep learning, don't give up!

Oijos: You seem to be in a delusion that the Lernu!-courses are valuable. Very few would pay for them – Esperanto is too easy and Internet and libraries are not short of material.
To me that reads as plain rude. You have not paid anything to be here, you have not paid anything to be allowed here to insult your hosts. Lernu (apart from a few quirky forum members) gives a warm welcome. What have they done to deserve this treatment except try and teach people Esperanto for free?

@ That guy. Saluton, I'm a new member (4 days old). I'm ignorant as a brick with the language right now, but as an English Teacher and Literacy Specialist with extensive self-teaching in Spanish, Latin, and German (Ok, I'm maybe I'm not as dumb as a brick with Esperanto; actually, I'm finding it quite easy), I can tell you that it's one of the best programs I've encountered so far for self-moderated language acquisition. It's on the ugly side, but it's also not part of the "New Web" we're all used to where aesthetics are often as important as design. Lernu appears to me to be concerned primarily with utility, and that's fine.

Now, I'm on lesson 11. I just aced Testo 1. I imagine there are course-wide exams or something, but from what I saw, the tests, more than the actual lessons, are the weaker part of the program. However, sufficient flexibility is built into the answering mechanism that it's surprisingly adept at interpreting user input with the acceptable range. In terms of actual teaching and assessment, THAT IS WHAT THE TEST IS SUPPOSED TO DO. Like, precisely. The objective is that you understand X, and so the thing tests you specifically on X. If it tested you on Y, you'd be SOL and up the creek sans the paddle. I'm grateful Lernu doesn't sacrifice relevant material in order to achieve some artificial rigor. Let it be.

You don't seem to know the context of my statement. There have been plans to make some aspects of Lernu! pagendaj to use to cover expenses. I argued that there are too few users to make that work. And if there were enough users, most would simply switch to something free on the Internet. That's the way Internet works.

By the way, I find Lernu!'s courses childish and stupid, though I don't have much experience with them. The best courses were deleted some years ago for some idiotic reason. My feedback for one course here

Thanks for your useful comments, Oijos.

I'm really impressed that you seem to know which aspects of the new site would potentially come with payment and you know that people wouldn't pay it. It's especially miraculous since the team hasn't decided on any of these things yet - which aspects of the relaunched (still mostly free) site would come with payment and how much that payment would be. But you're probably right. If any aspect of the site at all came with payment, people would flee the site and go to sites that are 100% free for every single service.

That's probably why LiveMocha has been such a failure, because it offers a mix of free and paid services.
