Textbooks for studying Esperanto?

Can anyone recommend any good Textbooks for studying Esperanto?

I really like the site, but I feel like I would also benefit from a textbook.

I like "Esperanto: Learning and Using the International Language" by Richardson.

Note -- don't stop at the end of the 10-lesson course! Go through the readings at the back too. As it turns out, Richardson doesn't teach you the full list of prefixes and suffixes in the course, so you need those supplemental readings to learn the rest of the language.

I would suggest to try out Esperanto (Teach Yourself). I'm using it right now and for some reason using an actual book makes me feel like I'm getting a lot more progress than when I tried to learn it online. They did have a set of recordings of the dialog sections at the end of each lesson but it seems that Amazon doesn't ship them. Feel free to ask me or some others for the recordings if you get a copy!

There must be a lot of British Esperantists who learnt from Teach Yourself Esperanto. It was in print for many years. It's the book I used way back in the 60's.

Teach Yourself Esperanto is popular and good. The second edition (1968) is very charming and very British. The third edition (1992) is quite different: more modern but less charming. You can find used copies of these books at Amazon or at abebooks dot com

In addition to whatever main textbook you select, I would like to suggest also owning Step by Step in Esperanto by Montagu Butler. It presents Esperanto in 1,198 very short micro-lessons. Perfect thing to have on hand when riding the bus, waiting for a meal to finish cooking, or to read in bed before dozing off. It's out of print but available from used book dealers and of course there is a PDF floating around.

What qualifies as expensive? Books that are out of print can get pretty expensive (and Teach Yourself has been out of print for a while).

But the Richardson text is still in print. You can buy it for about $14 new on Amazon (it's hardcover) or $10 used. You can get a used copy of the old edition for about $3 on Amazon. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

Step by Step in Esperanto is still listed as in-stock at Esperanto-USA, $13 plus postage. If you're a book-lover you should have a look at their online bookshop.

I liked The Esperanto Teacher by Helen Fryer. It can be found for free on Kindle or archive.org.

Yes, sadly, Esperanto books can be ridiculously expensive, but Free Esperanto Book is free.

And two free textbooks from Project Gutenberg are:
The Esperanto Teacher by Helen Fryer, and
A Complete Grammar of Esperanto by Ivy Kellerman Reed.
