Can "aĵo" be used to refer to non-physical things?

"Aĵo" means "thing," but can it be used for a non-physical thing? As in, "the next thing that I want to do is eat lunch" (la venonta aĵo ke mi volas fari estas manĝi meztagmanĝo)?

Feel free to correct my Esperanto, it's likely that there are errors.

No. -aĵ- is a suffix meaning something concrete, so it doesn't really make sense to use it to refer to something that isn't concrete.

"afero" is the best generic word for "thing". "Afero" can be used for both concrete, physical things (Mi havas tri aferojn por doni al vi -- I have three things to give to you), and for abstract ideas (Mi devas fari tri aferojn kiam mi venos hejmen -- I must do three things when I come home)

"La venonta afero kiun mi volas fari estas tagmangxi" -- the next thing that I want to do is eat lunch. Note that it should be "kiu" and not "ke" (two different forms of "that" ), and whereas we say "eat lunch" in English, names of meals can be used as verbs in Esperanto, so we more frequently say "tagmangxi" than "mangxi la tagmangxon".

Erinja, sorry for my comment, of a beginner. Your explanation appears appropriate for the word "aĵo". But the suffix -aĵ- can also be used in non concrete sense, does not it? For example, "novaĵo".

marco - thank you for your note. I suddenly understood what my better half means when he says: Sorry, but... Apparently this is a "brazilanaĵo" (meaning "a way in which Brazilians talk" here, though some might more linguistically call it a "Brazilianism" - but I mean it more pragmatically). I have sometimes been offended by his manner of saying things (as well as have some of our friends). Thanks to you, I understand that you in no way want to offend Erinja but just add a somewhat contrary opinion.

At any rate, I found "friponaĵo" in PIV, defined as an "ago de fripono" so that maybe Z meant it also as an "ago". Which makes me ponder another entry in the same volume: "li meditis pri la tuta strangaĵo, kiun li vidis ĉirkaŭ si" Z - and the definition of "strangaĵo": Io stranga. So did Z mean that (male) someone was meditating about a concrete strange something or a more abstract strange something? Mmmm.....

The primary definition of -ajx- is "something concrete". Idiomatically, the suffix can be used in ways that are less concrete, like "novajxo".

Here's the definition from PIV, my translation:

Suffix expressing:
1 a concrete object, concerning the root: bonaĵo, belaĵo, necesaĵo, manĝeblaĵo, uzaĵo (every object or tool in use); kavaĵo, araneaĵo, francaĵo, ĉirkaŭaĵo, kromaĵo; sensencaĵo, tolaĵo (something made of linen), lignaĵo, feraĵistoj k kupraĵistoj.
2 an external manifestation of an action of feeling: fluaĵo (something flowing); skribaĵo (something written); konstruaĵo, vegetaĵo, akiraĵo; okazintaĵo; enteksitaĵo; kreotaĵo; amikaĵoj, porkaĵoj, azenaĵoj, infanaĵo (actions worthy of a friend, a pig, a donkey, a child); fierindaĵo, abomenindaĵo.

aĵeto. A small or unimportant object: mi bezonas aĉeti kelkajn aĵetojn. Rim. 2 A noun formed by adding -aĵ to a morpheme expressing quality, is different from the word aĵo used independently with an adjective expressing the quality, in that the first shows an essential constant quality of the thing being discussed, while the second only means that on this occasion, the object has some kind of non-essential quality: ne estas novaĵo, ke nova aĵo plaĉas; ŝiaj belaĵoj superbrilis la belajn aĵojn ĉirkaŭ ŝi; tiu aĵo estas malpura, sed ĝi ne estas malpuraĵo.

He didn't ask for something that isn't concrete. He asked for something that isn't physical. And of course -aĵ- can used for that, see the link to PMEG in the post of marco_.
