I want to know how to say "ski,"

as in the activity where you ride on skis and go down a snowy mountain. The vortaro is giving me both "skii" and "skikuri;" are these both correct, or does one mean something else?

So for instance, if I want to say the following: "When you visit the mountains, if it happens to snow you should ski."

Should the word for ski be "skii" or "skikuri?"

to ski = skii

skikuri [ski + kuri] = to run on skiis

"kiam vi vizitas la montojn, se neĝas vi devus skii."

A good tip when using the vortaro is to break up words into their roots as much as you can on your own and then search for each individual definition. Also, you can use the esperanto-esperanto vortaro setting to get a more descriptive definition. It might lead to looking up more words, but in the end you get a more meaningful definition.

Lernu's Eo-Eo definitions are fairly limited, so I recommend using the Plena Ilustrita Vortaro (PIV) to clarify things when the En-Eo translations are ambiguous.

Nek PIV nek REVO donas bonegan klarigon pri "ski". http://eo.wikipedia.org/wiki/Skiado

Sxajne | Apparently :

skikuri = movigxi antauxen sur skioj per sia propra forto (EN: cross-country skiing)

skii = cxiuj skiaj sportoj kune (EN: all types of ski sport together)

> where you ride on skis and go down a snowy mountain

malsuprenira skiado, alpa skiado, dekliva skiado ("skikuri" is NOT good)

Clarence666, remember that this is the English forum - please include an English translation with any explanatory text you write in Esperanto.

I admit I did not look in the PIV for skii, but mine was a more general comment on how to find help in this situation. Skii works fine for "skiing", but to be more specific to "snow-skiing" you would have to get creative, but this would be almost certainly unnecessary due to context (you don't water-ski in the alps).
