gxi means "it"
tio means "that"

Kio estas tio-what is that
tio estas...- that is

it isn't common to say

what is that
it is...

same with "kio estas gxi"
"gxi estas..."

Maybe in Esperanto. Where I'm from (SW Ohio) that's how we said it. "What's THAT??" "It's a praying mantis"

[de] Wenn du "das" mit "dieses", "jenes" oder "welches" ersetzen kannst, dann ist es "tio/tiu"; sonst "gxi".

Sometimes in Enlgish "it" is used because the subject is needed. In these case there is no subject in Esperanto:
"pluvas" - "it is raining"
