Saluton -

I'm wondering what people here use to mark the accented characters (ĉ, ĝ, ĥ, ĵ, ŝ, and ŭ). I've been using Ek! which I like but lately I've found that I when I hit "Enter" nothing happens while Ek! is on. This has happened at about the same time with both of my PCs, making me think it's due to a recent Windows 7 update (Ek! hasn't been updated to be guaranteed to work with Windows 7, as far as I can tell). Has anyone else had this problem? And just now it doesn't seem to work for me in Microsoft Word either. malgajo.gif

I've also used the method where you specify combinations of keys to hit to produce the accented characters using Windows keyboards but I find it a little awkward for my fingers. I really liked Ek! and even found some features I didn't know about here, but the Enter key issue is puzzling and frustrating.

I use the keyboard layout "US international with dead keys" and hence I type the accent first, the letter after and magically they become one accented letter. Not only for Esperanto, but also e.g. for Spanish vowels with tilde á Á etc and eñe ñ Ñ.

The only adaption I needed to do was mapping ^+u to ŭ and not to û.

Sounds like a possibility for me, but I'm not sure how to make dead keys work for consonants - I couldn't find anything in my initial Google search. Can you instruct, nornen, or provide a link?

Actually, I found a page of the New Zealand Esperanto Association suggesting the Enter key problem has popped up for others, though I'm not sure why it was working before for me and not anymore. It also mentions Klavoro por Vindozo, but using the right Alt key seems like it would be very unnatural (requiring tucking your right thumb under your palm if you're typing with a standard hand position). I like Ek! because it doesn't require any simultaneous key combinations and/or odd hand positions.

I use the U.S. Extended keyboard layout setting on my computer, which allows you to press option-6 for ĉ, ĥ, ŝ, ĝ, ĵ, and option-b for ŭ.

Doesn't windows come with an Esperanto keyboard?

I use Tajpi, which works according to the same principle as Ek, but it might have been updated more recently and it should work with Windows 7. If you switched to Tajpi, it would probably be the closest thing to what you've been doing (actually using the program there is essentially no difference). Have you tried that? I don't personally love having to use a different keyboard, it is nice to be able to throw in Esperanto text in the middle of a sentence without crippling my normal English typing.

Dankon, Erinja! I had tried to download Tajpi before, but my antivirus software kept blocking it. So I disabled it temporarily during the install, with the hope that there's nothing actually problematic with the .exe file. It seems to work great so far!

Some antivirus software flags Tajpi as malware because the program monitors the keyboard input, in the same way as a malicious program would do. But you can be assured Tajpi is safe. The source code is available for download anyway so you can check yourself if you wanted to.

This is good information. Thanks. I use Tajpi on Windows 7, and recently one of my malware scanners (the sort I start by hand for full scans, not running in the background all the time) began marking Tajpi and its installation file as (potentially, at least) bad, even though I had been using it for some time.

I wouldn't worry too much about this. It is quite probable that Tajpi is the victim of your scanner's heuristics. After all, it does interfere with your typing and might be mistaken as a key-logger.
