The program I am using tells me that "de" means "of, from," and that "el" means "out of, from."

Does anyone care to explain how these are different and give me examples of each word? Please tell me when to use each word, and when to not use each word.

Dankon.

Here are examples based on my understanding, which may be right or wrong:

Mi ricevis libron de mia fratino.

Nia geavoj estis el Kanado.

Hi Magyar,
A good source for grammar questions is PMEG (Plena Manlibro de Esperanta Gramtatiko) de Bertilo Wennergren.

In this book, you find details about "de" which I do not want to summarize here, but a core statement about "el":
"El" is used for moving from the inside towards the outside.
Moreover, it means a selection out of many.

To use the sample from "jamesstytle":

1. Mi ricevis libron de mia fratino.
2. Ŝi elektis la libron el multaj titoloj.

Without being an expert, I would say that "de" is more "from" and "el" is more "out of".

Hi Jamesstytle,
Just a tiny hint - shouldn't it be "niaj geavoj"?

Olsho:1. Mi ricevis libron de mia fratino.
"de" may mean "of" or "from" here. If you need "from", you can change word order:
Mi ricevis de mia fratino (la) libron.
De mia fratino mi ricevis (la) libron.
(La) libron mi ricevis de mia fratino.
If you need "of" (my sister's book), in most cases "la" is needed:
Mi ricevis la libron de mia fratino.
But there still may be misunderstanding.
In the case
Mi ricevis la foton de mia fratino.
there is one more meaning: my sister made the picture or my sister is on the picture.
In the case "made" you can speak:
Mi ricevis la foton fare de mia fratino.

Compare in Hungarian
De la domo: háztól
El la domo: házból

And also from my sister.

Pasintjare estis 42 fotoj de 15 personoj el 9 landoj (talking about entries in a photo competition. - 15 people sent in photo's)

In the case of 'ricevi de', you just have to use context to decide.
