Does anyone here use esperanto when they text on the phone? I have a friend that is learning and I enjoy having esperanto in my everyday life. Has anyone on lernu exchanged phone numbers so they could talk or text in esperanto?

I don't understand why they need to change phone number to do this? You need only install Esperanto keyboard to your phone. You can't do it in your old phone, you must buy a new one and put the old SIM card from your old phone to the new one. You save your phone number. If you don't want buy new phone, you still can use Esperanto by using cx, gx, jx, hx, sx, ux or ch, gh, jh, hh, sh, u.

Nah, he was asking if people have given each other their cell phone numbers, not if they requested for specialized sims.

I haven't done it, but I could easily do it, although I'm only willing to text/ call Australians, as international charges are not worth it.

Use skype, for calling, and FB/ Twitter/ Lernu for messaging, snail mail/ email for slow pace conversations.

I'd dare say people have done it, but as Esperanto is an international community, texting/ calling each is not very cost effective. So again, Skype suites this.

He meant to ask if anyone sends text messages to other esperantists, not to (merely) type esperanto text on their phones.

For those with Android phones you could use Google Hangouts for texting, since it uses data instead of texts. I use a pay-as-you-go plan, so I have my roommates and friends/family use Hangouts to text me over data instead of using up my normal texts. Hangouts also has video chatting, so you wouldn't need to use skype.
