Currently I am not struggling with anything, but the biggest thing I have struggled with is: Antipassive.

I need more speaking practice. There're plenty of methods to get speaking practice, but I just don't have the time. Family life makes it a challenge to schedule speaking Hangouts on Google.

I have been trying to acquire Mandarin. One of the biggest obstacles is the stupidity of Taiwan, Singapore and Hongkong who insist on using the old characters and sometimes the Wades-Giles (or yet another) transcription. They should just accept the fact that the majority of people use the simplified characters and the standard is Putonghua. It is even more confusing than the old fashioned British spelling and British irregular verb conjugations in English.
In Mandarin this makes everything super confusing, especially if you don't live in China and the native speakers with whom you can talk (in language class) insist on using their out-dated forms - which also exist is several variations. It is too much information with too many exceptions for the beginner. They are so steeped in their political convictions and their antiquated poliitical biases that they are defeating the whole purpose for the foreign student. I could, in deed, one day learn the old characters but first I have to stand on one leg.
When I teach English, I teach my students the easier American versions and point out the other irregularities. If they want to later study these specifics, they will atleast be able to feel confident in what they do know.

I agree. The combination of work and family commitments, coupled with the expected apprehension and anxiety about trying to converse in a new language, is a formidable obstacle. I am, however, learning a lot through corresponding with other members here. But I am sure there is no comparison to the acceleration of learning that would happen if I were conversing in the language regularly.

Just a thought about motivation. A few years ago I signed up for a half-marathon and it motivated me to run lots during the preceding months. Perhaps you could sign up to a kongreso in a few months time? It might help you to push your progress before it begins. Of course, this will only work if you still want to progress! Good luck.

My problem is that I always find it far easier to understand a language, than to use it actively. Passive "usage" is far easier as texts, broadcasting, music etc are usually readily available. However, getting opportunities to use languages is often hard, especially when you get corrected every two minutes!

Looked this up. I thought the middle voice in ancient Greek was hard, but that looks like a doddle in comparison.

I am definitely stuck in that rut between intermediate and advanced! I am trying to learn more and more vocab and get actual practice in, but I just am not getting anywhere at the moment!
