Here's a website to try and collect 10 million signatures of people who agree to learn Esperanto given 10 million people agree to do so. The idea was originally articulated by Zamenhof in "Unua Libro", although it has yet to come into fruition.

Who manages that site?

How many signatures are there now?

I've no idea who manages the site, but if you click on 'Signatures', you will see seven people have signed up so far.

I manage the site. I created it very recently in an effort to bring further awareness to the Esperanto movement (to which I am relatively new). I came across Zamenhof's 'universal vote' idea and thought it was pretty sensible. If anyone has ideas on how the site could be improved, please let me know.

As a side note, I do plan to incorporate other languages in the future.

This is a great idea. I can imagine this going viral on Esperanto day or something similar. A simple signature is easy, requires minimal effort, and you never know when it might take off and kickstart a new wave of Esperantists.

I signed it, although I already know Esperanto, of course.

I agree about the possibility of its going viral; it certainly has promise.

May I suggest, Jonatano, that you ask on the Esperanto forums for help in translating the main text into other languages without delay, and get some related social networking presence for it too? All assuming that you haven't done that already, of course.

'La Promeso' - brilliant idea! ridulo.gif

Yeah, you should be able to get all the free translation you want. I'd also ask other more knowledgeable people about other forums to spread this, as I am still only really a Lernu user. I bet facebook might be a good medium, but I'm (un)fortunately ignorant in that area as well. This just sounds like a great way to get "normal" people to entertain the idea.

Awesome, thanks for the feedback guys! I posted in the News forum asking for help translating. A friend of mine is currently helping me translate into Spanish, Portuguese, French, and Arabic. Do you think an entire copy of the website should be available in each language? Or is it enough to only have the text of the actual promise in each language but the rest of the site in English?

It would be best to have it auto-detect the language and be entirely translated, but English would probably be fine on the rest of the site. You could also do the whole site in Esperanto... okulumo.gif
