mi ken toki e toki pona. toki pona li pona tawa mi. mi wile moku e moku palisa lili. soweli mi li wile moku e soweli lili.

[I can speak Toki Pona. I like Toki Pona (lit., "Toki Pona is good to me." ). I want to eat little bar-shaped food. My pet wants to eat little animals.]

I've been studying it some in the past month and have learned all the words, and I have succeeded in having some conversation on #tokipona on Freenode on one occasion (at that moment there was more activity on #tokipona than on ##esperanto! That was weird). But I can't really read much, or say anything particularly meaningful. That doesn't mean that it isn't possible to say something meaningful, it only means that at my current level I am not able to.

I've tried to register on three different Toki Pona forums, but never received a confirmation email from any of them malgajo.gif.

Cool. I might try learning it sometime.

Is Freenode just a chat service? I have gone to their website a few times but I still can fully understand the purpose. It is just to communicate with other people right?

I like the fact that it is encrypted

FreeNode is a network for IRC (Internet-Relay-Chat). In order to use it you need an IRC-client. There are also several web-clients available like FreeNodes own one or Kiwi IRC. For example there's the site esperantejo.com, which makes use of Kiwi IRC for connecting you to the channel ##esperanto.

I've been using Anki to try and learn the toki pona words, and I'll tell you I never realized how conditioned I am to learn Esperanto words. For the life of me I can't get out of the mindset that -a words are adjectives, -i words are verbs, etc. Regular endings just moved up on my list of things I love about Esperanto.

In my experience a lot of IRC channels seem to be full of lurkers who are signed in but not always there.

I think depending on the client some people might just be on 24/7. Not just lurking but not there at all. With my client, I connect when I'm there and disconnect before I leave but I think a client like pidgin could be setup with IRC. I leave pidgin running 24/7. I just don't run IRC on it.

Yes, prior experiences can most definitely effect how we respond to other languages. For example, among constructed international auxiliary languages (conIALs), I have at least a modicum of experience with both Esperanto and Interlingua. If I think about composing a brief text in one, I find that I have cross contamination from the other. malgajo.gif I want to express something in I-gua and an E-o expression comes to mind, and vice versa. Some individuals, especially as adults, are more adept than others, but for many others, this can be a consideration.

A bit too cutesy for me. I doubt I'd get much out of it. Not enough time, even Esperanto qualifies as much more useful.
