Until I figure out what is going on, the only other way to get around it, that I can think of, is to use the Facebook login.

I'm not sure what the last part of your footnote #6 means.
6) There must be no friends. It is better to use approach of Google Plus and Twitter where you follow people who are interesting for you. Following means you should be notified about changes in their profiles. I don't think it is necessary to have a feature of posting as users can post in relevant sections of the forum. Such posts will be better targeted.But as far as Verduloj works, it has friends and followers. To friend somebody let's you use the instant messenger with them (like facebook). To be a follower, you will see whatever updates/pictures/videos/blogs/forum posts they make (like twitter/google plus).
