Top-level domains typically are for countries not languages. Without an Esperanto country would it make sense to have a .eo top-level domain?
Just wondering what people's opinions are of this.

Generally speaking, though? .eo would be ideal. The fact there is no country Esperantujo doesn't really matter. There is a .su domain, despite the Soviet Union no longer existing.

Tempodivalse:Prices for top-level domains start in the five digits, I thought. I don't think most Esperantists can afford that. (George Soros, you listening?)We could crowdfund it.

A .eo domain would provide a perfect portal to the world of Esperantujo.
This would raise awareness of the language, allow existing speakers to more easily find and interact with other existing speakers, and make it easier for newcomers to find "signs of life" which would dispell the idea that Eo was a good idea that died out.
UEA could act as a non profit independent administrator of the domain.
They could obtain funds to register the domain by preselling subdomains eg (insertname).com.eo
Imagine cocacola.com.eo, do you think cocacola might be interested in buying that domain name?
Ongoing registration fees for subdomains could be used to fund the costs of administration and other projects of UEA.
To prevent hijacking of the domain it would be necessary for UEA as an already existing and recognised representative of Eo to reach agreement with ICAAN that the .eo domain would be reserved until such time as sufficient funds were raised for UEA to purchase it.

UEA could act as a non profit independent administrator of the domain.Excellent idea. The Internet has been an incredible boon for Esperanto, and we need to capitalise on it.
Whom do we need to contact to get this idea actualised?

Tempodivalse:A good place to start could be sending a mail to the UEA, according to this list of organizations maintaining official relations with UNESCO, their mail adresses are: direktoro@co.uea.org and uea@co.uea.orgUEA could act as a non profit independent administrator of the domain.Excellent idea. Alkanadi:It would be cool but I think it is a waste of money if it costs a lot. Are there enough Esperanto websites out there to justify the expense.Surely the nature of Esperanto would warrant an expense-less assignment of the domain name to one of our non-profits, right? We could do a crowdfunding as suggested, but my first bet would be to ask if we could get it for free or for a discounted rate.
If five figures is really the going rate I'm sure a crowdfunding campaign could raise the money if it were properly run. Heck, that much money is nothing to some larger companies that might enjoy the publicity this could potentially provide.
