Music is great way to learn/promote Esperanto. With all due respect, I haven't yet heard any Esperanto music that sounds really amazing. I am a tough critic because I don't like music much to begin with. But, it just seems like Esperanto music is good for camp fires rather than being broadcasted on the radio.

What are your thoughts? And, what is the absolute best Esperanto song that you like the most (if applicable)?

I really like "Adiaŭ birdeto mia" by the group Kaj Tiel Plu. Having raised children of my own, I always smile at the ending.

I believe that the OP is saying that we need an Esperanto pop-star. Someone who is able to get airplay on physical radio stations, or at least make a dent on iTunes' charts.

Campfire songs are nice and dandy, but they won't bring in people to the movement.

I was thinking about myself actually. I was just thinking that it would be nice to have some cool music to listen to, which would help me learn.

But, since you brought it up, good music would attract people.

I have a brilliant idea. Remember Weird Al Yankavinch. He just ripped off popular songs and made them into comedies. Maybe, some musically inclined person could do that with Esperanto.

Absolutely, and Martin kaj la Talpoj. They even have some good music videos. I also would say Dolchamar is not "campfirish", and some of La Perdita Generacio's stuff is also of radio quality.

I understand the criticism, but IMHO a lot of it has to do with more mature tastes in Esperantists than in the general population. I see far too many people who "hate all country" or "only listen to metal (or country, or rock)" or "rap is crap" or "only listen to skilled/complex music" and so on (usually to maintain or avoid a certain image), and IMHO that is just immature. All good music is good music, and even if it isn't my go-to choice I can enjoy real music. And yes, my answer to "so, what kind of music do you like?" is "good music".

I would put the campfire/minimal music of Jxomart kaj Natasxa higher than most of the popular stuff they play on the radio. The intimate setup with just a guitar and two voices is a welcome difference. I'm also the type who enjoys the raw vocal auditions of shows like American Idol because they are just more real to me than when they have 30 dancers on stage and a full band behind them.

All that being said, I would love to see more current trendy music in Esperanto. Surely we could convince a few of the myriad Indie artists to publish a few songs in Esperanto?

I am trying a bit to contribute to that.

I'm afraid I don't understand your point; what has taste in music to do with maturity? To me, one's taste in music is just like one's taste in food; a matter of subjective personal taste. So, a statement like "rap is crap" seems to me not an expression of immaturity, but the personal opinion of someone who does not enjoy the sound of rap. Everyone has their own taste, and something that one person enjoys hearing will annoy somebody else. And I don't see anything wrong with that. For although we all hear the same sounds, through the same sense of hearing, our brains are each unique, and process those sounds differently. So, if I don't listen to certain styles of music, because I don't enjoy those sounds, that is my personal taste, just like when I avoid certain foods because I don't enjoy those flavors. Of course, it is good to have a wider taste in music or food, because the more things you are able to enjoy, the more opportunities you have for enjoyment in life. But please don't judge people, whose tastes don't happen to be as wide as yours, to be immature.

Or am I missing something? Did I totally misinterpret what you said?
