Tempodivalse:Having Esperanto on Duolingo will give it a degree of credibility - "hey, look at this, it's serious enough to be listed here, and it's got lots of learners - it isn't dead!"Having Klingon on Duolingo will give it a degree of credibility - "hey, look at this, it's serious enough to be listed here, and it's got lots of learners - it isn't dead!"
I agree with you, but it just occurred to me that EO on Duolingo might still attract "IT'S A FAKE TOY LANGUAGE" comparisons with Klingon, since it is also coming to Duolingo.

Just having Esperanto up there will increase visibility, and maybe cause people to at least look it up on Wikipedia even if they don't learn the language. That has to be a small plus. Esperanto can't expand unless people know what it is first.

Tempodivalse:Just having Esperanto up there will increase visibility [...] Esperanto can't expand unless people know what it is firstThis could be a great opportunity to get people educated about the difference between an artistic language (artlang) like Klingon and an international language (interlang) like Esperanto, or even a national language like German, French, English, etc.
altindiefanboy:A FAKE TOY LANGUAGEI doubt “a fake toy language” would be a typical expression for the average Duolingo user. In my opinion, no language should be considered that way. On the other hand, I know there are many people out there full of prejudice towards Esperanto, Klingon or even national languages. The best tool against prejudice is information and education.
Cdub4language:concerned about Klingon affecting the credibility of Esperanto on duolingo, as the only two conlangs...Klingon could be a very good ally too. Duolingo will be a place where you can learn any type of language, not only national languages, but artistic and international languages too. The important thing is that people begin to understand the different purposes that different languages have.

The Duolingo method looks good but they do not have the range of resources that Lernu has or the connections with the Esperanto movement.

... but I am also concerned that having Klingon being advertised on Duolingo at the same time as Esperanto will make people say "Look, two fake toy languages!"
I don't wish to call Klingon a fake toy language but the bottom line is that people see it that way, even more than they see Esperanto that way. On the other hand I've seen plenty of news coverage of the inclusion of Klingon, and this probably helps drive more traffic to have people find out about the Esperanto version as well.
I am always in favor of new Esperanto learning resources. But we shouldn't freak out if this doesn't turn out to be as big a bump to the movement as we might hope, and we need to manage expectations. Having a feature film with a well-known actor in Esperanto doesn't really do much for the movement, for example. (Incubus)

erinja:Having a feature film with a well-known actor in Esperanto doesn't really do much for the movement, for example. (Incubus)That's probably because the film is just bad. Mediocre acting, bad pronunciation, and not the best plot.
I watched "Angoroj" recently. A much better production, in my view - the accents and acting were believable, at least.
antigone314:Thanks to Lernu and some of the youtube videos Esperantists have posted we have started to practice the basics. I can't tell you all how happy this makes me.Thanks for sharing your story! Very heartening. Best of wishes in your learning.
