Alkanadi:Does anyone know how to activate the speech recognition? I don't see any button on the screen that looks like a microphone. I have flash enabled but I don't see how to submit my answers via the microphone.I wonder if it is not available for Esperanto yet. It works for me on Spanish but then is not offered with Esperanto.

Overall though, this looks to be a great program, we have to thank the Duolingo developers for the time they've put into it.

I always hear people criticising Rosetta Stone for having irrelevant sentences. It must be the price that people are more upset over. Maybe, when they get something for free, they appreciate it more despite some strange things.
Overall though, this looks to be a great program, we have to thank the Duolingo developers for the time they've put into it.The contributors should be very proud of their work. They did a great job! I totally appreciate it.

I'd only really worry if the sentence had been "Via urso drinkas bieron' since that would mean the bear has a drinking problem and should get some help.
I've been working my way through the course. It's been quite helpful to clarify some things to me in a few instances, and it's been extremely frustating in others because of some of the missing acceptable translations and word choices. I've been reporting a lot of stuff and just a few minutes ago found somewhat more egregious error, where the course creators put an -iĝ suffix on to interesi and then put a direct object after it. Oops.
But overall, I think this is a great development for Esperanto. I don't really know how many people will see the course through to completion, but those that do, they'll probably learn enough that they will be able read and chat some using Esperanto, and they'll find out that they can use Esperanto much faster and more effectively in a short time than any of the other languages available to learn on Duolingo.

However, it's great it's finally up and running!The course is still in beta, so you should always report these errors so that it can be corrected.

That is probably why they included it. They also want to create many strange scenarios to encounter, and make the learning process interesting and memorable.

I'm closing in on completing it, although some of the problems with valid translations not being recognized because of word order or typos have made me want to slam my head against the keyboard in frustration a few times now, especially since I'm trying to do everything by the test out option. Which means I can lose hearts and I've had a number of almost successful attempts wiped out by the their problems and sometimes just by my fat clumsy fingers.
I have learned a few things and clarified better some issues. But this is definitely beta. I've collected a good number of my suggestions being approved already. But it's painful to find those needed suggestions.

I imagine there are plenty of people already helping out with troubleshooting, finding errors, offering alternative translations, etc.

In a very real sense, it's the other users and me now doing the course who are troubleshooting it. Looking at my gmail, I've now collected a total of 12 suggestions which are now accepted. I made a lot more tonight working some the final branches of the tree.
Of course, not all error reports are correct or accurate. I imagine that maybe I've made a few because of my own idiocy and misperceptions.
But it would certainly would be wonderful for this beta phase to be resolved quickly, so not too many users feel the frustrations that I have felt sometimes. That's why I try to report everything I find which I feel fairly certain is a problem.
Even so, I've learned some new vocabulary and now understand some of the trickier concepts in the language better. I really have no idea whether this will make any substantial growth in the number of Esperantists out there, but I feel it well might do so. There'll be people there who will now see a chance to study this so-called easy to learn language and will get to see that right beside their efforts to learn other languages. For some at least, they will be drawn in by the fact it is easier to learn Esperanto and that they will be able to communicate much better and sooner than in regular foreign languages.

I feel that despite it being beta, it should serve as a pretty solid introduction for someone learning Esperanto. Hopefully as the beta glitches get smoothed out of it, that'll help prevent users from having too many frustrating moments. I can't say that I'm an advanced Esperantist, but I'm fairly solid 5 years after I began learning it. The course helped me finally click on a few things and taught me some new words, so I feel it's been helpful to me and I'm glad to have done some help with finding errors and missing translations.
It'll be interesting to see how many people are introduced and complete the Esperanto tree at Duolingo. If nothing else, it has to have at least put Esperanto into a somewhat more visible location on the web. Of course, that location is mainly populated by people who are interested in learning languages, but that's not a bad place to be. Not all of those will have an interest in learning Esperanto, but the presence of a structured course there will almost certainly draw in some who might have never before considered Esperanto. At least some of those will be like many of us here on Lernu, charmed almost by the simplicity of the language that still gives us full range of human linguistic expression.
We should give a grandan dankegon to the Duolingo contributors that built the Esperanto course there.
