I just received news today that Don Harlow has passed away, after battling cancer for several years.

Don was among the most well-known and highly respected Esperanto speakers in the US. Many people in the online Esperanto community, also outside the US, are familiar with his website, which hosts an extensive archive of Esperanto literature.

Don was one of the first Esperanto speakers I knew by name. I made extensive use of his literature archive as a beginner, and I still regularly recommend it to new speakers who are looking for some reading material.

Don spent most of his adult life involved in Esperanto, and spent many years working in the central office of the Esperanto League for North America. I was only able to meet Don once, since he lived on the other side of the country from me. After meeting him, I really regretted not living closer! Don had a great sense of humor, and was so interesting to talk to. Unfortunately, by the time I met him, he was sick, and already looking drawn and tired from the treatments.

Don will be sorely missed.

Oh, That's terrible news indeed. Don was always someone eager to help out beginners. He was always so generous with his knowledge, and I know he helped me on my path in Esperanto on many occasions. He will be sorely missed. In fact, he already is.

My condolences to his family, and to all the people who knew and loved him (whose number, I'm sure, are legion).

When I first started learning Esperanto, Dons pages were amongst the first I came across. I read all of them, and learned a great deal from them.

I later joined the ESPERANTO_102 Yahoo Group, and was delighted to find that Don was not only a member, but a very active one. He answered quite a few of my questions, and we also had some very nice conversations about Oregon (at the time I was living about a 10 minute drive from where he had grown up, in Lake Oswego, Oregon).

I am very sad to hear of his passing. He will surely be missed by many people around the globe. He certainly will be missed by me.

not to sound like a vulture, but does anyone know if his liturature pages will be kept up.......or at least not taken down?

Commiserations - I remember Don Harlow being helpful when I asked him a question last year. There's so much useful information on his website. It would be a pity if things like The Esperanto Book weren't published in book form. I feel the same way about Piron's numerous articles, essays and interviews.

It's very, very terrible news. I always liked his "The Esperanto Book"...His articles and blogs, along with Piron's, inspired me to learn E-o.

I offer my condolences to his family...Peace be upon him and S-ro Piron...

For those who might be interested, the Harlow family has put up a memorial website.
