Reading the Vikipedio page about the UK, I stumbled on the first sentence:
La Unuiĝinta Reĝlando de Granda Britio kaj Nord-Irlando (aŭ Unuiĝinta Reĝlando; oni kutime mallongigas al Britio) estas lando en Okcidenta Eŭropo, sur la insuloj Granda Britio kaj Irlando (norda parto), kune kun kelkaj insuletoj
Why is that "...kune kun kelkaj insuletoj"?
Wouldn't "kun" have sufficed?

Read it as "along with".

In theory, yes, "kun" would have sufficed. I think "kune kun" gives more emphasis to a passive closeness, for instance when reading a list, whereas "kun" is more commonly used to describe an active proximity.

Mi estas kun vi = I am with you (possibly, although not necessarily, in a relationship of some sort)

Mi estas kune kun vi = I am in your company. Someone who is looking for me would find me near you.

This is my opinion based on my interpretation and my experience. Corrections are of course welcome!

That would be translated as "together with a few tiny islands". You could have omitted kune, but I think it reads better with it.

Assuming that kune kun is a translation of 'together with', the question is 'why do we need the word 'together'? One possibility is to prevent readers regarding the smaller islands as being a part of Ireland because of their place in the sentence, if kune were omitted.
But personally I agree that we could well do without kune. In fact I would further revise the last bit to read enhavante la insulojn de Granda Britio, la nordan parton de Irlando, kaj kelkajn aliajn insuletojn.
