In the international context, calling a single person the same way as a group is simply absurd. If you are trying to argue that some person may take offence to a singular 2nd person pronoun, I can respond that other person take offence if they are referred in the 2nd person at all, as they consider the 3rd person as the only polite way to refer to strangers.
We need this pronoun one way or another, as you can see.

Grand. My dialect as well. We use something called the 4th person to deal with that situation. What has that to do with Eo and why must Eo mimic the mechanics of my tongue?

Not true. We do say: "Does your mercy know where the subway is?"

usted = vuestra merced

We do indeed use the 3rd person singular, but only because "your mercy" requires it. And "your" = "vuestra", so pluralis maiestatis. You cannot get possibly get any more formal.

By default, I would use 'vi' and not 'ci'. I would use 'ci' only if I do know that it is accepted. Which means that I would never use 'ci' in conversations with Erinja fe - or with anyone I meet the first time.
In the other hand, principally I find 'ci' very convenient. The fact that 'you' in English and 'vi' in Esperanto is used both for plural and singular is somewhat annoying at times (though I am used to it). The reason is clear - my native language pattern...
