Is there a list of Esperanto names for various pieces of furniture available somewhere? Right now I am specifically looking for how to name a wooden, chestlike cabinet on legs, but would like a list of furniture names. Dankon!

An "alta knabo" (kidding!)

This is a tough one since furniture often has regional names even in English.

I'm not sure if I even have a special word for such a piece.

I was afraid it would be tough. Well, how about ligna komodo kun kruroj? Would that do? Thanks!

From the description alone, I'm not even sure what I'd call it in English. If you could link a picture of what you're talking about, that might make it easier.

It looks something like this.

Vestitor (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 10 Agosti 2015 10:11:57 alasiri

It's not really a cabinet it's a free-standing kitchen work surface with drawers and open storage underneath (that'll be a mouthful to translate and render into a few words!).

More like kuirejstablo?

Breto (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 10 Agosti 2015 10:49:10 alasiri

It seems similar to a credenza. I don't know if Esperanto has a word for that specific item, but a quick wiki-walk gave me kredenco in Ido. That said, Vestitor's kuirejstablo (or perhaps kuireja stablo) seems to hit the nail on the head; I can't think of a better description for that picture than "kitchen workbench".

sudanglo (Wasifu wa mtumiaji) 11 Agosti 2015 2:07:07 alasiri

With reference to the illustration (the kitchen island) Vestitor's kuireja stablo doesn't seem bad at all.

In that sort of furniture item the underneath storage spaces do not seem to be defining.

However the fact that you can walk all round it, have access from any side - which contrasts it with such an item as part of a fitted kitchen - does seem to be essential.

This does seem to me to be not fully captured in the concept of stablo, though many stabloj would have that feature.

I suspect that Kuireja insulo/kuirista insulo or similar might be readily understood in those countries that have the sort of kitchens that feature such things.

If you are very lucky JKP you might find it named in the obsessively detailed latest edition of the Esperanta Bildvorto. (You can find the first edition on the net, but that is based on rather old pictures - see pages 52, 53 for the kitchen)
