This can be only practically done on a country by country basis.
A poll gives inaccurate results because the sample size is really low, and people have to voluntarily answer the poll.
If you want to seriously estimate the number of Esperanto speakers, I suggest you study basic statistics.

How about we extend the same respect to those engaging in a different activity that we might find to be needless and unpopular (counting Esperanto speakers) by leaving them alone. If taking the survey doesn't interest you, you can just ignore it, no need to dump all over the person offering the survey simply because it isn't your cup of tea.
I suggest either offering some kind of constructive advice ("I recommend studying statistics, your sample size is very small") or spending your time on another thread, if this topic doesn't interest you.

whysea: because it really is of interest to me to eventually find out how many esperanto speakers there are, approximately.Well, the most precise estimation is probably the following:
10^3 natives
10^4 quasi-natives
10^5 regular fluent speakers
10^6 eternaj komencantoj or people who once started learning
A year ago there was this figure that 350.000 facebook users indicate in their profile, that they speak Esperanto, which is in accordance to that estimation.
So if you are interested in the number of speakers, here you go. More precise your survey won't get.

bryku:As far as I can see, there are just about 400 esperantists on that list. A strong argument to ignore the language by all international forces.Well, the more people that respond, the better information I will have. And I can't get people to respond if I don't tell anyone about it.
Also, if you think I'm going to send this random google doc to the UN or something...Well that's just not at all what I'm doing.
johmue:Yes, I know about the Facebook figure, as well as about a few censuses conducted by various nations. The current figure on Facebook is actually 310,000. I made this if you are interested:whysea: because it really is of interest to me to eventually find out how many esperanto speakers there are, approximately.Well, the most precise estimation is probably the following:
