This topic is something of an obsession. Will the results please people or just disappoint them? After reading the other related topics I'd say it's likely to just cause disappointment.

The pie chart showing male/female numbers is interesting.

I doubt you will get even a significant minority of Esperanto speakers worldwide to fill out this form, so its value as a census seems minimal.

I don't fill out such forms.

Having said that, I don't really mind if people want to spend their time creating such surveys. If it makes them happy, why not let them have a go?

There are many people who don't actually speak Esperanto who will participate in the survey as well as many constant fluent regular speakers who won't ever hear about this survey. So whatever the result is, it will be totally useless.

To those of you having doubts about this survey: The person who made this survey originally has given it up due to negative feedback about it being not worth doing and so on, basically what you guys are saying, and he gave it over to me. I'm still interested in the results. I want to educate myself on the process of gathering such information, because it really is of interest to me to eventually find out how many esperanto speakers there are, approximately. (Like I saw someone say, trying to figure this out is like trying to find out how many people in the world play piano.) I'm also enjoying the information about the gender ratio and the different countries people are putting down. Perhaps this individual survey will not be useful on its own, but experimenting with these things could provide useful for future investigations into the question of what the population of Esperantujo looks like. As the saying goes, innovation is 1% inspiration, 99% perspiration. The inspiration to make a census of esperanto speakers is clearly present in our community, as someone said they've seen about 10 of these. It's the people making these imperfect surveys that are putting in the perspiration. Doesn't mean it's guaranteed to work every time but you get nowhere at all if you're not willing to experiment and to fail many times before you succeed. ridulo.gif
