Vestitor:I don't know how true this is (I've never been to a big Esperanto conference), but I imagine the Esperanto movement is a bit like the youth socialist movement or green movements when it comes to topics like this. So open-minded your brain falls out.
No, I don't find it to be that way. It is generally more liberal than conservative but there are plenty of centrists, some right wingers. In addition, the internationalism of it inherently leads to some widely diverging opinions. A conservative or liberal in country A doesn't believe the same as a conservative or liberal in country B. You can just read the discussions on the Russia/Ukraine situation and see if people are being so liberal that their brains fall out! (answer: no).

Mutusen:Why don't you ask this question in the Esperanto forum?
I did

Tempodivalse:I would be interested to know what percentage of Esperantists are teetotalers (besides me ridulo.gif) ...I agree it should be on the Esperanto forum.
I don't drink Alcohol. I don't use any drugs. I think the harm outweighs the benefits.

I believe that weed should be completely legal and Alcohol should be restricted. If weed was legal then criminals would do it and become very relaxed and non-violent.

I did post this in the Esperanto forum.

Drugs put two of my dear friends in psychiatric hospitals and has caused my nephew irreparable physical and mental damage. They cost me a relationship with a woman that, at the time, I was engaged to and dearly loved.

You could say I am anti drugs.

The new drugs they have on the street these days are even worse than the traditional drugs. They are scary.

I think weed is great, and psychedelics can be 'useful' if taken in a controlled environment.

I think alcohol should be strongly discouraged, and tobacco phased out completely (Tobacco is the only drug that prohibition would be successful with because it's so useless. It's only successful because of clever marketing).

Drugs like heroin, cocaine, meth etc... do too much damage and should be treated like an illness by the government.

Here in the Netherlands there are loads of people chronically addicted to weed - mostly people who don't have two farthings to rub together. A lot of people between 13-25 wasting their lives away because weed makes you lethargic, too relaxed and thus kills motivation.

The people who promote it and promote legalisation, especially those middle-class and upper middle-class types who use it now and again and have the cash to spend on it, should be publicly horsewhipped.

I agree. But, I have some doubts about psychedelics. There was a girl who was doing Ecstacy in our highschool and her hair started falling out. What else is she damaging?

Weed is the ticket to reduce crime by about 80%.

I don't do any drugs though. Very rarely, I use caffeine. When I was in University, I used caffeine for exams and term papers.

I suppose to keep this sort of on-topic (i.e. pertaining to Esperanto) I should ask if there's an Esperanto term for "street drugs" as opposed to other kinds of drugs.

It doesn't seem like the sort of thing that should be translated literally.

That is why it kills crime. That is the real way to fight crime.

But, I would hate to see people wasting their lives. Oh well, it is better than drinking alcohol.
