What is the difference between
ĉi and ĉi tiu

For example, what is the difference between these:
Ĉi tiu leciono estas bona
Ĉi leciono estas bona

Ĉi denotes proximity. I suppose its literal translation as used with tiu is 'that (thing) here', which is this.

Used alone it means 'here', but it's not encountered all that much.

The second sentence you gave is not 'this lesson...'

When ĉi is used alone in that way you put it together with the word, like: ĉileciono
In other words it's a contraction of ĉi- tiu -leciono

Edit: This aparently just for adverbs

And ĉi standing as a sole word is like vestitor said.

No difference in meaning really, but the 2nd phrase is more modern usage. It's not specifically wrong, but some consider it evitinda to leave out the "tiu" like that.

There's a section about it in PMEG.

"Ĉi leciono" sounds unusual. It's definitely acceptable in songs or poetry, but it's not something I would say spontaneously.
