The congress is the world’s largest and longest-running Esperanto gathering scheduled to take place in Seoul 22-29 June, 2017, with more than 2,000 participants expected at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Seoul Campus venue.Maybe by 2017, I will feel confident enough about my Esperanto skill level to go to this.

For your average Esperantist, local meetups are probably much more satisfying - you aren't lost in a sea of people, and you don't have to spend thousands to get there.
Not to rain on anyone's party, though. Very fortunate for Asian Esperantists

Tempodivalse:Nice. Another UK that I will never be able to afford to come to.That's the trouble with world congresses. They are always too far away for the big majority of world inhabitants to attend.

Local meetups are ... well ... local. To breathe the spirit of the international Esperanto movement in all its colourfulness you should IMO attend a major international meetup. It doesn't have to be UK though. Also regional ones are fine.

This topic has been discussed on another thread, but large Esperantophone gatherings can be really lonely places if you aren't a big extrovert and don't have some friends coming with you. Cliques tend to form and it's hard to break into them, though this may be true of most large gatherings.

Introverts seem to be more action orientated. Introverts, like me, dread the thought of going to an event where people just mingle with no organized structure.
Also, they could have volunteers to go around and chat with people who are by themselves.
Or, maybe if people check the box that says they are coming alone, they could be automatically paired up with someone else in the same boat. Maybe, part of the fun would be trying to find your partner based on some clues.
