I doubt the UN cares about Esperanto any more at this point.

We can't proclaim that it's the easiest language, we can't proclaim that it has that big of a propadeutic value, we can't even proclaim that it will make the world a better place as Zamenhof envisioned.
We are sitting here in this world in our own skewed view of it.
We are idealists, we would like that our idealism reflects reality but certainly it doesn't yet.
I would like to have again a view of it all which reflects reality. Where Esperanto makes sense anymore.
Still a lovely language, that's something no snobish Linguist or activist can take from me.

fantazo:Well, it's a hoax. But then I'm asking myself as always what can we Esperantists (tm) say with true certainty about the use of our pet language?Well, high expectations are easily frustrated.

What you are describing is a finvenkist hope, and the sense of disappointment that I think a lot of finvenkists face if they've been around long enough. I suspect that many Raumists are just finvenkists who have decided to look beyond the old Zamenhofian vision of "one world, one tongue". In my case, it meant looking inward rather than outward.
I view Esperanto primarily as something personally enriching to myself. I get to talk to people around the world in a common language in a way I couldn't with any other language. I get access to all sorts of interesting translated literature that is not easily obtainable in English. I get to enjoy the language's unique aesthetic and expressive qualities. EO gave me a stronger grasp of grammatical principles, which I can apply to other languages, even my native ones.
All this, without the normal toil of having to learn a language to full fluency by years of immersion. It's really opened up a small new world for me.
Surely that is valuable in itself - regardless of any gains Esperanto may enjoy (or not) in the popular sphere.

Although no country has adopted Esperanto officially, Esperanto was recommended by the French Academy of Sciences in 1921 and recognized by UNESCO in 1954, which recommended in 1985 that international non-governmental organizations use Esperanto. Esperanto was the 32nd language accepted as adhering to the "Common European Framework of Reference for Languages" in 2007.You can read more about it on the English and Esperanto Wikipedia pages for the Montevideo Resolution.
The Montevideo Resolution is the common name for Resolution IV.4.422-4224, passed in Montevideo, Uruguay on December 10, 1954 by the General Conference of UNESCO. The resolution was in support of Esperanto, an alternate international language, and recommended that the Director-General of UNESCO follow the evolution in the use of the language. In 1977, the Director-General visited the Universal Congress of Esperanto in Reykjavík, Iceland and in 1985, UNESCO passed a further resolution recommending that member countries encourage the teaching of Esperanto. The 1954 resolution was the result of a long campaign by Ivo Lapenna.

Vestitor:What's Esperanto for 'dashed hopes'?Misespero or something of the like. Ironically with Esperanto as the root word.
